Any woodworkers?

Made my buddy a shelf/decoration for his new son’s room. I’m not sure how functional this thing is but it looks nice!

 

The final details of this box build. Several coats of spray on waterbased polyurethane, sanded with 320 grit after the first 2 coats, then applied 2 more and sanded again, followed that up with a 0000 steel wool rub down. Top coated with minwax wax. Here you can see how I recesed the area for the mounting tabs for the door.

Door is fit in place and then screws are used to attach it.

The finished box will be given to the recipient at church tomorrow.

 

Made another smaller coat rack for the bedroom to keep the jackets in their own space.




In the process of making it I got annoyed by the 1x2 falling off/shift on the paint cones so I went and made my own, designed and printed in a few minutes and I'm digging it. They are pretty much a cluster of cones, stackable making them easy to store, perfect for narrow wood pieces usually hard to put on cones, and gives you a larger contact patch for larger pieces too if you need more stability for them too.

 

I ordered this pattern online, it's 15" tall. So I figured I'd make one to see how it goes
Traced the pattern out on some maple.

I cut it as close as I could on the bandsaw but the blade I have is too wide and I couldn't make tight turns. So I need to order another one. Maybe a 1/4" Then I used a flush trim bit to clean up the edges. When I started the speed of the router was way to high and I burned the crap out of the maple until I figured it out.

Next I used a trim router and a round over bit. Again, speed was too high and I got burning again.

Profile looks good, burns look bad.

I flap sanded the edges and shot a coat of waterbased polyurethane on just to seal it as it dries quick.

Lessons learned on this prototype. Router speed was too high. Radius in the corners needs to be increased, I'll order a new larger 3/8" trim bit. And a 1/4 bandsaw blade.
My goal is to sell a few of these and donate all the money to the church. I'll donate my time and the materials.

You may see the burn as looking bad, but I think its kinda cool lol. Honestly, if you maxed the router speed and went all the way around, it seems like you could intentionally give it a torched edge look, without the nasty "overspray" most people would do with a torch (that you can't really always sand out). I did the opposite on some deer euro mount plaques I made a while back. Torched the entire mounts, and then routed, to give a clean edge.

Funny that you posted that, some friends suggested the same idea. After looking at it for awhile I'm going to try one with a burnt edge but with a torch and not the router, lol. Burning up router bits gets expensive! I got a micro torch so it may be more controllable

Speaking of routers I snaged this Bosch 1617evspk kit on Amazon for $169. I won't use the case so it'll get pitched. This makes 3 of these routers I have now, so all accesories are interchangeable.

I grabbed a handful of trees off the curb yesterday, cut off the branches and threw them in the shop to dry out a bit.

 

Eucalyptus shimmers like gold. Good stuff.

Making sure the ladies/guests don’t snag their threads. Stuff is hard work.

 

Did a little different woodworking today. This involved chainsaws and a mini excavator. Clearing the lot for the house build.

That pile of logs is good size. All are 10-15 feet long poplar, oak, and pine. Another similar and growing pile past the mini excavator.

Back at it tomorrow. We should have about a half days work to get the space we'll need and a little yard space out front (right side of second picture).

 

Post your building site in the proper "regional" ... your logs may go away for free.

Yes! I was watching a video today where he made this table top.

One of the things YT is good at is providing inspiration for woodworking projects.

 

I tried a new technique yesterday. Rather than fighting the burn marks I enhanced it and torched the edge all the way around. Then sanded the top and sealed it with blo. Probably going to take a couple coats of blo because it soaked right in on the burned section.

I think I like this look.

I gotta keep playing around and trying new things.
