90k miles and im done

So i love my 2024 Taco but i have no plan to keep her beyond 90k miles or so. I just dont think this 4 banger drivetrain will last much beyond that without major repair bills. I mean the engine is already noisy i cant imagine how loud and rattily this thing will sound like at 80k miles. How long or how many miles does everyone plan on keeping thiers?

Have you owned a Toyota that got progressively noisier as it ages? My 1FZ-FE and 3UR-FE sound the same at 250K miles as they did at 50K miles. I expect the T24A-FTS will age similarly.

 

Seems a little premature to make that decision now. Unless you're nearing in on 90k miles and having issues.

 

Yes, it does seem premature but this aint my first rodeo in a 4 cylinder. The typical progression as milage piles up. 0 to 50k typically no issues, 50k to 100k the engine gets louder and more rattily sounding, 100k to 150k is where the real problems typically begin. This phase is what i call the nickel an dime phase and includes failures of the interior equipment and electronics, slowly but surely, one by one. All automobiles suffer failure at some point, just a question of when.

 

Is this your first Toyota? I'm on my 2nd, they are noisy...it is what it is. The first one, I only did regular maintenance until about 160k, then the fuel pump went out and I had to rebuild the driveshaft. Sold it at 197k. The current one is at 126k. Just replaced the driveshaft and fuel pump. The A/C pump went bad this past summer also...but this truck plays a lot harder than the first.

Still, the engines are solid, for the most part. I do share the apprehension on the turbo-4, but manufacturers have come a long ways in the past 30 years.

 

Im going to keep my 4th gen as long as possible. All this speculation about the reliability of the 4th gen engines is pointless at this moment in the 4th gen life cycle, we just simply don't know. I'm hopeful this engine will last like the rest of them as it was designed from the ground up to accommodate the turbo. This isn't the 90's where we are slapping turbos on any engine we can...we've come a long way since then. Engine knock and thus keeping engine temps under control at high pressures is the biggest issue to contend with on forced induction engines. The coolant lines on these engines are fucking huge, indicating to them that they thought that through. Time will tell, though... crossing my fingers!

 

The 1.6 Million mile Tacoma had a 4 cylinder engine in it. Two actually. The 1st one needed a head gasket at 900,000 miles so they replaced it with a scrap yard engine with 100,000 miles already on it. Then drive it another 600,000 miles. Truck was still running when the owner died.

The turbo is new to Tacoma, but others have been using them for a while. If Ford can put a 2.7L turbo in a 1/2 ton and make it work, I'm sure Toyota can figure it out.

An inline 4-cylinder is a hell of a lot simpler than a V-block engine. Plus, this motor turns a lot slower than the old V6, which means much less wear.

So... keep cogitating.

 

fo real ... when you open the hood on a 4th gen the spark plugs are practically begging you to service them. Pain in the ass to swap out spark plugs on my 1st gen v6

 

If you look at ditching it, try to before 60 or 80 thousand miles. If I recall those are depreciation points.

Someone showed me that if you don't sell a car by 80K then you need to plan on keeping it until you can donate it for scrap to the Kidney Foundation. That's like 400K for a Toyota.

The used market for Tacoma’s is not following that belief though. Which is great!

 

I've got 63k on my 2017. It just turned 9 years old a couple of days ago.

What’s the milage ? I do agree I don’t see long reliability with these 4cyl engines since they are turbo charged and produce more heat . Would loved to have seen a 6 cylinder in these new trucks . The 4 should have stayed with the sr model .
