Could of been pretty bad thankfully co-worker noticed oil under my truck this morning.

Wife checked and no oil in my garage so must of happened on my way to work sometime. Luckily I'm assuming it was close as I was only 1 1/2 quarts low after changing the filter. It was just pumping out even at idle.

Anyone else had O rings break like this? Was completely broken when I took off the oil filter.

Bad installation, is only cause of breaking o-ring.

My guess is it was installed dry without coating o-ring with oil before install and/or it was placed in wrong channel on housing. I only use OEM.

Not sure how to have bad installation.

Sitting in the groove before and after. It didn't leak right away either its been over 1K since my oil change I did my self.

Always do my own and always lube it up with oil before installing. This is a first for me ever.

Where is the other piece? That was cut during the installation of the filter canister.

No chunk the 2 ends were almost touching when I removed the canister.

Its not smashed or anything just clean cut.

I should of kept the O ring to take closer pictures. Its in the trash now.

It is a manufactured product, one of millions turned out each year - every brand makes a bad one now and then.

I would be thankful it was caught before any damage was done and move on with life.

What was the P/N, PXL57047 (economy line), 57047, or 57047XP?

If you bought a few and have another Wix filter of the same P/N on hand, measure the O-ring against Denso's: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=6391383&cc=3354143&pt=5340&jsn=647

I heard from our commercial rep at Oreillys and they said Wix is now owned by Fram. Take from that what you will. I don’t know if that’s true or not just what I heard.

^Your commercial rep is misinformed. Mann owns Wix and Purolator: https://www.mann-hummel.com/en/brands.html

Fram is part of another conglomerate that also owns Reese, Trico, Raybestos, Cardone, Centric (StopTech), etc., some with good reputation, some not so much: https://firstbrandsgroup.com/ Might be the reason my last set of StopTech rotors didn't fit on the hub without sanding...

Is there any chance you had it in the wrong groove? It is well documented on here, where people have inadvertently installed the oring in the wrong groove. It does not go right up against the end of the cannister, there is a groove, below the base end, made for the oring. If so, is there any chance while tightening the cannister, it rolled out of the groove, and was cut, when tightened, and pressed between cannister threads, base, and engine housing? Ski

When I removed it the O ring was sitting in the bottom groove not above it where its threaded.

Is it possible? Maybe I don't take pics and I figure changing my own oil all these years its second nature but no guarantees. Everyone gets distracted and I can't say if I stopped in the middle of changing oil or not. I can barely remember what I did last week.

^I just ordered a PXL57047 (cheapest filter at my local parts store) to harvest the O-ring. Will take some measurements against the OEM O-ring.

There are two ways to manufacture O-rings. First way is to mold it as a contiguous piece. Second way is to extrude it like a string, cut to length, then chemically bond the ends to form a circle. The second method can be done in the field as well with small kits for example. So yeah a hypothetical lapse in quality control during the bonding process can create a weak point.
