You checked engine oil level? Change out engine oil and engine oil filter, but send sample of old engine oil to Blackstone Labs, to check oil out.;)

Sorry it took a while to get back. It’s a long story. So after the dealer flashed the ecu we thought it was fixed but unfortunately after a day or so the issue came back and it eventually got worse, knocking consistently even when not up to normal temps yet. Took it back in and they suspected it could be something to do with my rack and pinion/steering rack itself or something. To test this they disconnected the power steering pressure switch and immediately the knocking and idle issues went away. Reconnect the switch and the issue came back. I had a known rack and pinion leak issue that I had been babying for a couple years using AT-205 Reseal and had planned to have the entire rack and pinion assembly and steering rack replaced in the spring anyway so I told them to go ahead. Just a note, last summer I did a complete power steering fluid flush. Anyway the service bill was not cheap! I’ve been driving it a couple days and have not heard the issue come back so I hope it’s fixed now. I did see the rpm’s go up a little when I turn the steering wheel but I feel like this was normal, correct me if I’m wrong and maybe others here can confirm. Otherwise no issues. Hopefully this is the correct and final fix. If it’s not, next part to get replaced will be the power steering switch.

From what I’ve read, a faulty power steering switch or issues internal to the rack and pinion or hydraulic system being compromised seems like it could definitely cause the issues I’m having.

They said my entire assembly was heavily corroded and also recommended replacing the lines as well. I’m in central NY and I can confirm the new brine and salt solution they’re using on the roads here just wreaks havoc on vehicles. My truck just gets rustier and rustier no matter how much I washed it, used to hit the car wash almost daily during the winter months for years. Hopefully this info helps somebody else out. Will update if anything new comes up.

About that, I learned an interesting (if true) fact about car washes. According to the folks at NHOU, the car washes recycle the water, and just filter out the dirt, but the salt stays in the water, so every trip through the car wash in the winter just sprays that brine everywhere, corroding your vehicle even faster.....I do know that it takes a major effort, energy-wise, to remove salt from water.

I have heard that as well. Nowadays I just hose it off at home as best as I can on days when I know night time temps stay above freezing.

here’s a funny incident involving rust. , Not my vehicle and thankfully nobody got hurt.
