I have a 2004 2.4l manual 2wd base model. I’ve seen guys swap the rear axle with TRD e locking axle on 4x4.
    Questions:
1). Has anyone done this swap on a 2wd base model? Other than the 5 and 6 lug difference is there anything else that won’t bolt up?

    2) I know the pumpkins are a dif size and gearing is different but that shouldn’t matter, right?

    3) wiring it up doesn’t scare me too much, but does anyone have any info on wiring?

thanks in advance to anyone with helpful info!! I already found an axle for the swap, I just want to be sure it will work before I buy it.

I don’t have much info on the 5 lug trucks, but check that the bolt spacing at the rear pinion is the same (I believe it is 60mm x 60mm on the 4x4).

5 lugs are spring under axle (SUA), which I don’t think will bolt up directly to a spring over axle (SOA) leaf perch like the e-locker housing will have. At the very least it will make the back of your truck sit 5-6” higher. You’ll need the u-bolt plates that go with the e-locker axle.

The stock wiring goes through the 4 wheel drive module in a 4x4, a 5 lug won’t have that same setup so I assume you’ll need to wire it directly to a relay and switch. Seems like that shouldn’t be too hard though.

This will be interesting, 6 lug and 5 lug wheel.

5 lug is 7.5 and TRD elock is an 8” but if you’re swapping the entire drum to drum housing, that shouldn’t be a problem. As mentioned, 5 lug are SUA and 6 lug are SOA. You’ll have to fab the perch. Another concern, tho I can’t confirm, is the driveshaft bolt pattern. Not sure if it’s the same.

As for the wiring portion, you’ll need a switch (off/on), fuse, connectors, and a DPDT relay. That’s essentially it.

Ok I’ll measure the driveshaft bolts and make sure they are the same I appreciate that.

The axles being SOA and SUA I’m not too familiar with what those differences are exactly and have to do some research, sounds like an intimidating hurdle.

as for wiring I assumed just wiring up to relay and switch would suffice

SOA - spring over axle (6 lug)
SUA - spring under axle (5 lug)
Terms refers to the physical placement of the leaf springs at the axle tube

Another consideration is wms. First gen 6 lug (8” elock and 8.4” non) are ~60.75” and I’m not sure about the 7.5” 5 lug

Like I said, you will need a DPDT 8 prong relay, not the standard 4 prong relay.

    Good luck

Forgot to mention, I believe the emergency brake cable will be different between a 5 & 6 lug. You have to come up with a solution to that as well.
