I printed a ocarina and a scraper!
I just got my new A1 set up and it’s been great thus far. Yes, I know I’m spoiled by getting a plug-and-play model before having had to learn all the settings and tinkering needed to make other printers work. Nonetheless, I’m pretty stoked.

If anyone has any recommendations on tutorials for the ins and outs of the A1’s settings, or on using Fusion or similar CAD tools, I’m all ears. I used Sketchup for a project about 15 years ago, and haven’t learned any CAD since then, so I’m prepped for a lot of YouTube, forums, and trial-and-error ahead…

If you like course-style learning, Bob from iliketomakestuff has put together what I hear is a great course on Fusion. I like his youtube videos so I imagine his course would be good too. I personally use onshape but I don't have any recs for learning it.

If you just want to get into the flow of basic shapes and stuff again, tinkercad is great. It’s aimed for school children and students but for basics it’s fast and easy and free. I don’t even know how many things i’ve made in there, a lot.

What kind of stuff do you like to make? More mechanical and precise or more organic?

I’ll check both of these out, thanks!

Initially, precise and mechanical. Artistic creativity isn’t my strong suit, and right now I’m interested in making brackets and such for the truck. For instance, I’d love an Auxbeam mount for the area between the upper console and the sunroof. I’ve seen them made for the 4Runner, but not the Tacoma. So, however I go from measuring and scanning from Polycam (or whatever) to importing into the slicer…that’s what I want to learn.

I purchased it. A well spent $99 if you ask me....
Well thought out course, in easy to manage mini chunks of 2min to 5 or 6 min long so you can break it up however you like.
It can get a bit tedious if you are planning to sit down for a longer session, but the way the course is broken down makes it easy to pick Fusion up.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
A few days ago, I printed these:
    20241209_203428.jpg
    Pressed threaded inserts
    20241222_160308.jpg
    With the lights screwed in
    20241222_155913.jpg

What they are is light pods that fit Harbor Freight Rock Lights. They will mount on my roof rack for extra light at camp, 2 on each side. The pods are angled 25* to keep the main light closer to the truck. I bought the .stl file since it was only a few bucks. They are printed in ASA for better UV resistance.

Lol I had the same idea for when I got a roof rack, mount them and have them pointed slightly downward off the sides. Nice job.

Give it a try with asa-gf, the glass fill gives it a nice textured feel too.

Replacing the heater core in the wifes car I broke a plastic clip that holds the lines.

Printed a little die and made this.

    Question...
I don't have a 3D Printer and the last time I touched anything 3D Printed was about 10 years ago.

How strong are the parts that come out of this process? I'm sure a lot of that depends on the design and material used but when I saw them last the nature of squirting it out in layers meant it would de-laminate under pressure. Pretty brittle. Have we solved that yet or is this still more of a novelty area?

I ask because, while not interested in a 3D printer, I see a time where most homes will have one sitting right next to the HP LaserJet 1655xe that prints out camp fire recipes and land use permits.

Well your in luck, just take a look through this thread there are plenty of examples of actually useful prints. Allegedly the guy right above you just formed 18 ga steel with PLA(easiest to print material and most brittle).

That's actually why I was asking. I'm pretty surprised and impressed at what I'm seeing here.

Yeah, 3d prints are like anything. They are strong enough for the application if designed and constructed correctly.

Compared to 10 years ago I wouldnt say the strength of 3d prints have gotten that much better, the big difference is 3d printers are much easier to use and need less tinkering to get working good. My bambu p1s is just as reliable as my tablesaw or hell even my dishwasher. I turn it on send a print to it and return and magically I have my model printed. More reliable then most 2d printers I deal with.
