These people also seem to be entirely unaware of the fact that supercharging engines is almost as old as engines are. Turbocharging diesel engines has been popular for like half a century because diesels, due to their high rotating mass, usually don't rev and thus make very little power. Turbocharging them helps with that. Yet we don't hear them complaining that "it's hard on the motor" or "it's another thing you have to replace."

A while back, I had me a 1999.5 Audi A4 1.8T Avant quattro. It had a turbo I4. Made all of 150hp out of 1.8L, which confused the heck out of me. A turbo and still less than 100HP/L. Either way, I ended up junking it at 214k because I was sick of replacing parts. Thing was, it wasn't the turbo that was the problem. It never was the problem. It was original. It boosted just fine. If you're worried about your turbo's longevity, change your goddamned oil once in a while.

It's funny that anybody would be against turbo-fours and then suggest an EcoBoost. It's right there in the name! Most of the EcoBoost engines sold are turbo I4's! EcoBoost engines have their problems, but, ironically here, they're generally not about induction. They're usually about timing.

I've only seen one I4 ecoboost that needed a turbo. Most of the issues aside from the timing is the turbo cooler lines leaking on the v6 ecoboosts. Replaced a LOT of those. lol

One thing to also think about/consider is that Turbocharging and mechanical Supercharging in aircraft goes way back to at least WWII with examples from the U.S., Germany and Japan. Those from the United States included the: P-38, P-47, B-17, B-24, B-29.

I would say the label: "Proven Technology" would definitely apply here! I have had three Volvo turbocharged cars going back to the 1980's. Once they added coolant bearing cooling in the 90's, they became near-bullet proof. Previously they were prone to fan bearing failures from failure to idle them for a bit before shutting down due to oil coking. Changing the oil every 5,000 was another key. They (mine) never used any oil or otherwise suffered any failure(s).

Yeah but we have to be scared of turbochargers for reasons!
They’re too complex, that’s why I won’t buy any car without points ignition, a 2-speed transmission, flat cylinder heads, and a two barrel carburetor!

    :proposetoast:

A 2-bbl is way too complex: stick with a one-lunger single-bbl. Think: "Lawnmower" they never break down: bad gas, 10-year oil changes, run it out of oil, mow on a 80-degree slope: All Bueno.
