I’ve searched far and wide but can’t find any answers so here I am. Does anyone know if there is a tune that can account for a 33gal tank on a 3rd gen Tacoma. Would be nice to not have the computer tell me I have 15 miles to empty when I have 1/2 tank left.

Is there some sort of hack where you can open the fuel door after using 13 gallons and trick the computer into thinking there’s a full tank?

Nothing currently, unfortunately. One of the things keeping me from pulling the trigger on one of those.

Not sure but I don’t think that wouldn’t be sustainable. Everything works as it should except distance to empty

I’d still do it. Having the extra range is totally worth it. Kinda a 1st world problem to not have Distance to Empty working. When you clear the notification it doesn’t come back so not annoying in that regard. The empty light when it comes on indicates you have 7gal remaining so I just do some match with what my average MPG at the time is. All other functions work as they should. Just the Distance to Empty is inaccurate

Tunes accessing and modiefying ecu/tcu modules.
The fuel parameters are stored in combination meter module.

or you can play with resistance to dial the level to your setup

As far as I know, there is no access for anything like that. There are many ECUs and at least on the vF side, there is only access to two. Engine and Trans ECUs.

Could you track DTE with a Scanguage? I know you can set the tank size to whatever you want on that device.

That is at least what I am planning to do after I install my LRA tank later this month

I have an LRA (Long Range America) tank. As it has a drain plug, I ran it as low as possible, drained the remainder, and going bottom-up I charted the gauge readout versus the capacity inside (I gradually filled the tank back). I printed the attached chart and placed on the sun-shield (has a document clip on the inside), so I can quickly refer to it when needed. After a few tanks, you learn and it is really no issue.

Hope this helps. For the record, I came to rely on it so much (on long off-road trips in Morocco in 2022 and the Balkans in 2024) I will not upgrade my Tacoma (probably to the Lexus GX) until such a tank is available.

I appreciate that, it will help out a lot. Seems like it stays on full for quite a while then drops pretty quick. This whorls better than trying to figure out what mpg I’m getting on trips and then guessing how much is left in the tank

LRA says on their website that the fuel gauge will remain accurate in terms of levels, with 7 gallons remaining when the e light comes on. A calculation of miles remaining will depend on driving condition variables also. Welcome to the 1900’s when we had to estimate all that!

One alternative is to get a transfer tank instead of a built-in. They cost a lot less! I have a 15-gallon one and just refill from it when the main gets low. It does make my mileage calculation accurate. The tank does take up some bed space but it’s just on the side above the fender and next to it. The tank is very well built and much more secure instead of using Jerry cans. Transferring fuel from it is super easy also (Titan Sidekick).

Is there a reason you can’t make $50 in fuel cans work? You get almost the same increase in fuel onboard, no fuel gauge issues and keep $1500 in your pocket.

Usually excursions requiring the extra gas capacity also have a bed loaded with camping gear. No one wants to sacrifice the limited bed space to gas cans + have the possibility of getting gas on your camping gear, or worse, using a heater next to a few jerry cans.

Great points! I sold my gas cans and got a sidekick tank I mentioned earlier- my Chinese diesel heater is a forced air type with no exhaust fumes in the heated air. I put it on the ground outside of the truck and have the forced heated fresh air go up to our RTT using a drier duct.

That’s fair. I used to have mine in the bed and unless you pack a ton of shit there’s definitely room for two gas cans plus enough gear for a few weeks. I didn’t sleep in the bed though so I didn’t have problems with a gas cans and heater in the same space.
