I like Balistol it cleans, oils and protects and is safe on wood and polymers. I use a small amount of gun oil on key parts and Hoppes for the barrel every now and again or when it’s really dirty. At the end of the day they are hunks of metal and wood or plastic, you really can’t do too much harm. Just don’t over oil cause it will attract dirt.

Lots of great information here. I’ll just say the following regarding cleaning.
Use oil/lubricant sparingly. Very sparingly. Most newbie gun owners tend to use too much lube. Repeatedly using too much oil will literally gum up the works in addition to attracting dirt. Also not everything needs to be lubed every cleaning. Too much lubricant buildup can cause failure to operate properly.
Most owners manuals have pretty good cleaning advice.
CLP what ever brand is your friend. I use it on all my guns. I use oil occasionally and solvent occasionally. 90+ % of the time I just use CLP.
Always double check your gun is unloaded prior to cleaning. Never ever simply accept someone else’s word its unloaded.
Keep ammo and loaded mags away from the cleaning area, out of reach.
I could go on and on but the above I find most appropriate for newer gun owners.

thanks for all this, your advice feels right on, I feel a bit over prepared, over researched, which feel right considering the topic.
