@Discount Tire - Any concerns with an Ultraterrain needing this much weight? The truck has shaking/vibration at highway speed. I took it to my local DT a couple weeks ago for rotation and balance. The guy there said none were out of round, but that two needed 4+ oz to balance. The truck still shakes on the highway. Tire size is 265/75/16. Tires have ~5k miles.

Did it vibrate before the rotation and balance?

Yes. I would describe it as shaking at 65+. The higher the speed, the worse the shaking. The frequency feels like an out of balance tire, but I know these trucks aren’t ever perfectly smooth.

4 Oz is a lot. I'd be getting a second opinion

Mine needed more weight than I was expecting at first but never shook like you are describing. I took them in for a rotation/balance at Costco after about 25k miles and they seemed like they took off a lot of the weights for the most recent balance I got so maybe the tires smoothed out over time.

Costco or Discount Tire? Always thought the Ultraterrain was exclusive to DT. Good to hear yours are working out. Maybe I just need to pull off all the weights and go to a different DT for another rebalance. Would like to get thoughts from @Discount Tire.

Yeah I bought them from discount and had them shipped to me since we don’t have a DT where I live. Took it to Costco for the most recent balance/rotation.

I’d guess the tread wearing down over 25k miles, and weight reduction at the circumference of the tire, plays a pretty significant factor in weights needed for a good balance. Mine are annoying me enough I don’t think I’ll get anywhere near 25k before I replace them

I like them a lot. Did good in light snow around town this week. Looking to maybe see how the go in deeper stuff. General off road they do good as well. i've thinking of going back to a stock size tire once these are done but they don't come in a stock size. @Discount Tire you have any suggestions?

AFAIK, Discount Tire has left the forums.

@Evostaco - I ended up replacing mine (size 265/75/16) at 5 or 6k miles because DT couldn’t get them to balance. Bought a set of D-load KO2s in size 275/70/16 and had those match mounted and balanced by an independent shop with people that really know what they’re doing. The KO2s took minimal weights and the truck is now smooth as glass on the highway. No more noise than the UltraTerrain, and although subjective, look better in the slightly taller and slightly wider size.

DT has been great for all the other vehicles I’ve had there over the years, but for whatever reason, after multiple attempts at multiple locations, they simply couldn’t get it right on my Tacoma. Maybe it was the UltraTerrains, maybe it was the DT balance machines. Either way, I’ll be passing on GY tires in the future.

Edit: I’ll acknowledge that there are lots of members that seem happy with the UT (I was initially one of them before the balance issues started becoming more and more obvious). I’m not sure how they all drive. I’m 80-90% highway at 75 mph, which means balance is important for me. My hypothesis - I’m not an engineer by any means - is that GY made a relatively light tire that still has knobby tread. To be only 40-41 lbs, that means the sidewalls have to be light (and they are in fact very soft/flexible), which means much of the total tire weight is at the circumference. All that weight at the circumference, combined with 16” wheels, where wheel weights have less ability to affect overall balance, meant, at least in my case, a difficult tire to balance. Again, just my hypothesis.

Love mine too. I'm at almost 70'000 miles on my set. Going to replace them soon with another set. 265/75/16.

Mine are looking like they’ll make it damn near 70k too, at this rate the rubber will crack before the tread goes away
