I went in to grab groceries on the way home from work, left the rig running with headlights on. When I came truck was still running , but no headlights. The heads lights were turned on at the switch and tail lights were functioning . Pushing the switch forward , the brights come on fine .
#1 checked fuses - all good
#2 bulb - same does both- assuming good
#3 relay - hear audible click - assuming good
#4 steering column switch does running light and bright - assuming good

I don’t know where to go from here ……. Any help would be appreciated.

    pretty simple circuit to test...
you have a simple test light or volt meter?
ground one side on frame, any metal etc, negative ground source...
remove the connector going to your headlight & probe all the wires connections through the face of the plug....
one should eventually light up the test light or show voltage in the low beam position,
Im guessing if something popped you would lose your power source, so if you have that, throw some bulbs at it.

if it does have power, your test light lights up, or meter shows 12 volts, both low beams went out at the same time for whatever reason, it could happen....

if you dont have the means to test, go buy some bulbs, roll the dice...

Easy enough to check with a test light but my money is on bulbs.
I'd post the wiring diagram but you didn't state what year your truck is.

    easy enough to follow?
you cant damage anything looking for power using a test light, as long as wire is connected to ground..

H4 bulbs are such high, consistent quality it’s not uncommon to have both burn out very close in time to each other.

Simultaneously burning out would be pretty unusual. But that’s still where I’d start and where I’d put my money.

Any chance one of them had been burned out for a week or so and not noticed until the other went?

I pulled the plug at each light and checked power with test light . First on high beam to confirm my test light functions , then switched to low beam . There is power to the socket on low beam same as high, so it has to be the bulb . I’m in a small town in Montana so have to check the parts store on Monday or order on line . Thanks again to all for sharing your knowledge .

Is there a preferred or recommended headlight bulb for a 2012 Tacoma ?

best bulb kind of depend on do yo want to faver low or high beam and are you on the stock wiring harness or have put a upgraded harness in that can supply power to higher wattage lamps without melting

personally I need lows more than highs and haven't gotten a harness yet so I went with the Philips GT200+
