Hello, my name is Scott. I just joined to see if I'm the only one having this problem. I bought my 2016 4 door tacoma about 2 years ago. A year and a half in the battery died. Got a new battery and 2 months later battery was dead. The battery checked good. I have been unhooking the battery at night and topping off the battery to full charge. Is there a way or can a mechanic put it on some kind of scanner or something to find out what is draining my battery. TIA

Have done any Mods like lights etc? Have you had the battery load tested at a shop?

It is possible you have 2 bad batteries in a row.

You would need to do what is called a parasitic drain test, to do this you would put an ammeter in series between one of the battery cables and the battery, leaving the truck sit for an hour to allow everything to go to sleep, and checking the current.
It should be less than 50mA (0.05A), if it is higher then you would check voltage drop across each fuse to find the circuit(s) with the drain and go from there.
It can be a very time consuming process to find a parasitic drain if there is one but checking if you have one or not is pretty easy.

One more thing to try is unhook the battery at night and don’t put a charger on the battery. If you rehook up the battery the next day and it will not start that might indicate your second battery has a bad cell.

I went to the dealership where I bought the truck
I am not electrically inclined. It's like Chinese to me. To make sure it was done right, I would have to let somebody else do it. I found the paper where I went the dealership, and it stated...tested battery, it passed performance test. Performed a parasitic draw test and found the vehicle to have 43 Williams while all computers are asleep which is within specs. They said all I could do is drive. But I don't know when
I have done that and it starts.

Then you probably have a parasitic drain.

How long does it take to kill the battery? Overnight, a week, a month?
