Just recently bought an Ultra Gauge and happen to notice my temps on my truck are HIGH. What could be the causing these crazy temps??

I know my truck is overweight with the 35’s, front/rear steel bumpers and sliders. I didn’t think I was that heavy.

Tons of pics but to give you an idea, pay attention to my speed.

Tranny shifts smooth, no noises…nothing at all. Who knows how long my trucks been driving like this.

    Yeah.
You're in Canada and using freedom units. It's all confused.

Seriously though, those temps seem WAY high and that fluid should be toast. I am betting that is the temp at the torque converter, which will be much higher and fluctuate a lot more. You need the temp from the other sensor. I bet it is staying well below 200F.

Check your tran pan with an IR gun to get an idea if maybe your UltraGauge is not configured properly. The IR reading will be within 5 degrees of actual ATF temp. 300 is way too high. You have an ATF cooler?

    Yeah.
There are 2 sensors on the Tacoma, one at the TC, one at the pan. If those were pan readings I would be really surprised that there aren't any other symptoms. I know on the Scangauge they call them TF1 and TF2, and I think TF2 is the pan temp.

Does this seem better? I double checked the values, I was off on the output format, 31 instead of 00.

I don't know if I'd say "much" higher, but it ideally a little higher. 165-180 F is usually a good range for most auto trans fluids; mine typically hovers around 130-170 F, but I also have an aftermarket cooler.

Just took it around the block, 2-3min drive. It’s about 14 degrees outside for you American folks.

There are ten US states entirely north of Canada’s southernmost land point. Another 17 US states have points higher than that southern land point.

I think mine stays around 185 during normal use. My truck is heavy too. In the mountains I have seen it get up to 218 in the pan (before the cooler). If it gets any higher, i slow down, and shift to 4.

I do know the AT Oil Temp light comes on if the temp gets to 330 :anonymous:

Ive got full steel skids, sliders, F/R bumpers, 33s, and a GFC. I am also regeared.

    Yeah.
Yeah, the 1808 one is the right one. Those temps do seem low, but probably fine for how cold it is. Watch it on longer drives.

Edit: now that i think of it, coolant temp is around 185 during normal use. I havent been driving as much longer distances in my truck, but i remember TF1 temps on the scan gauge are around 160-180. I also have a bigger aftermarket cooler.

    Sorry for the confusion

Not sure but does the fluid circulate through the Rad.? Then it’s gotta be at least that temp. at the minimum. Mine heats up in deep snow. Kinda wonder if a gear change would increase or decrease the temp. :notsure:

This is maybe about 15-20mins of driving and the truck running.

    That’s much better. :)
