    Hey TW,

I have a 2008 V6 4.0L 4WD DCSB and my Check Engine light is always on when the truck is on. The truck runs fine and doesn’t give me any trouble except for that dang Check Engine light. I recently plugged an O’Reilly OBDII Scanner into the truck and they printed out the codes.

Primary DTC: P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

    Additinal Diagnostic Trouble Codes:

P0441 - Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow

P0455 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross Leak)

I’m not wanting to replace the catalytic converter and I have till the end of the month to pass smog. Feeling the squeeze a bit…

Can anyone advise me how to clear this up?

    T

441 445 are charcoal canister codes, can be ripped hose or cracked canister

How can I check to see if it’s one of the things you guys mentioned above?

If it’s somewhat easy to get to, I can get under the truck or under the hood to look for cracks in hoses this weekend.

    Where is this canister located?

The EVAP codes are likely a large leak but a smoke/leak check should be done to confirm, do note that you must cap/plug the fresh air line to seal the system. Closing the Vent Valve will not seal the system.

The catalyst efficiency code is likely a failing converter providing there are no exhaust leaks.
If the converter is still somewhat functioning you may be able to use a spacer on the downstream sensor to get rid of the light providing there is no visual inspection.

So, for a spacer… are you referring to this?

Yea but you typically need the tall ones, O2 sensors typically won't fit in the standard ones but sometimes there's not enough room for the tall ones.
Do note they typically only work if the cats are still marginal, if they are totally dead you will probably still get a P0420/430

I believe the 42109 is the one, just would have to verify that there is room for it and the sensor.

I replaced my Gas Cap last night and so far, the Check Engine light is still on. I’m going to buy a spark plug defouler and space the oxygen sensor back a bit and see it that helps.

So, I need a new Canister?
    Did you fix it yourself?
Any idea what the part number is for that?

As stated, your cat is toast...
The spacer may work, or may not...
Its a balancing act, clearing the light....
driving it far enough under the right conditions, parameters, drive cycles, enough to clear all the appropriate monitors....
for it to pass & not trigger the light to come on...
Can be tough, sometimes you get lucky.
Some vehicles are challenging & could take a month to clear the monitors.....

You need a way to check your monitors to see if they have cleared.
Either an appropriate scanner with the ability to & your knowledge of what monitors need to be cleared to pass smog on that application.

or you roll the dice, do the spacer, clear the light, drive it for a few weeks & take it to the smog test station.
If it fails, due to monitors not cleared.
You tell him you disconnected the battery for light work, stereo work, whatever....
You keep going back to him to re-check your monitors to see if its ready....

mean-while, pay your reg now, dont need to wait for the smog, get that out of the way...

Yes, changed myself. I personally had to cut a little of of the bed in order not to remove bed. I'm sure there's a better way but it worked for me . Canister hose from tank was a headache to remove.

I've got a 09 w/ 168k on her, I dread the day I get these codes if I'm going to have to cut a hole to get the canister out...

Thank you for your reply. I’m watching videos on YouTube right now that hopefully show how to replace that canister. https://youtu.be/6AvsSd6nuns

How long did it take you do do the job?
Was your truck up in a lift?

Did you use a grinder to cut the part of the bed that was in the way off?
