New to Tacoma World; Looking for advice on buying a camper shell for my 2006 Tacoma Access cab

I'm new to the online Tacoma World community and am looking for advice on finding and putting a camper shell cap on my 2006 access cab and I'm cluless! I did go into a local shop (they sell new A.R.E. and Leer). I asked about used and having them install if I could find one. I'm in Northern California, in the east bay area. And money is an issue, so I'm not looking for the most expensive, etc. Does anyone have any advice on what to look for when trying to find a used one? What experiences they have had with the one they had/have? Best brand, etc. Any advice is appreciated!

Keep an eye on Craigslist and maybe post in the local threads that you’re looking. Self install is pretty easy, but you want two guys to get it in place initially.

 

There’s probably a NorCal Craigslist thread in the regional section of the forum. People will post Tacoma related items they find for sale. Keep an eye on it

 

I bet if you are wiling to drive a little bit, maybe inland, you'll find a used shell cheap.

 

Don't be afraid to message people selling their trucks with shells. That's how I got mine. They sold the shell off the truck. Also things to keep an eye out for are cracks or if it's been repainted. You should be able to find a plate on the interior with the oem specs. I didn't check when I got mine, and it ended up being a repaint that's starting to peel a few years down the road. Installation depends on what you expect. If you want it to be totally waterproof, you'll have to spend some time setting up gaskets and applying sealants. Myself on the other hand, asked the seller to spend a minute lifting it onto the back of mine and I tightened up the clamps in a couple minutes.

 

Thank you RugglesTarlek, Pnwadventure, & ScrippsRanch67. I just put an ISO ad in my local neighborhood group and I'll maybe try putting one on Craigslist too. I will try to watch to see if any come up for sale. I think it will be hard to find used around here, but I thought I'd try, since you never know! Problem is I'm clueless! My local Toyota dealer advisor didn't have any advice either. I'm hoping to find someone that has one on their vehicle and wants to take it off and sell it and we could meet at a local shop to have it removed and installed on my vehicle. I can't do an install myself and don't have people capable of helping lift, etc. I don't know what brands to look at, etc. It's so overwhelming!

 

Thank you Jojee117! I will try it! I thought someone would prefer selling the shell with the truck, but maybe someone would be willing to sell separately. =) I will keep an eye out and look for cracks, etc.

Also try OfferUp, I’ve found pretty good deals on there. I was looking for a soft topper and I saw a lot of bed caps for sale priced decently.

Hey there, I'm probably going to be selling the shell from my 2009 Tacoma. Here are the details:

1. SnugTop. I don't know the model; photos below.
2. Pyrite Mica bronze color.
3. Shell is in excellent condition, was purchased new with the truck.
4. I have two keys for it.
5. Shell is still on the truck.
6. I'm in the East Bay.
