What would cause both the A/C compressor and clutch to fail at the same time?

Just got back from spending $2k to repair my A/C. Tech said both the compressor and the clutch were DOA and the system was empty. They replaced both and recharged w/dye and said to.look out for a leak. This thing worked flawlessly for years and then died suddenly last summer.

Is it common for these to go at the same time? What did I do wrong?

Maybe the compressor locked up and then smoked the clutch before the pressure switch could switch it off? Usually now days if the clutch is bad the whole compressor gets replaced anyway.
