Screwed up Power Steering Flush...how much damage did i do?

So i'll cut to the chase. I'm a total idiot. I didn't do a thorough search before attempting a power steering flush and i totally botched it. I'm curious what kind of damage i did and what i should be prepared to fix in the future.
    Truck is 2015 2WD V6.

    Here's what i did:
Removed tube that connects to "fill" side of PS reservoir, then cap off the outlet. My jack was not holding pressure, so instead of jacking up the car and turning the wheel side to side, i decided i would turn the truck on to turn the wheel side to side (wife did this) while i held the tube inside a bottle. I'm sure you already know how that turned out. The fluid immediately blasted out of the tube. I yelled to turn off the truck, but it had basically emptied the reservoir before it was turned off.

I was able to borrow a jack from a neighbor and got it up in the air and finished bleeding it correctly until it was clean fluid.

HOWEVER, when i first turned the truck back on to check... i felt a grind kind of feeling in the steering wheel when i first tried to turn it (while the truck was running). I didn't know the reservoir had lowered at this point, otherwise i would have immediately turned it off.

After turning it back off, getting the level back to correct, it appears to be working fine now. But I'm really nervous about what i may have damaged...Power steering pump? Rack and pinion? (please god no!!!).

What are your thoughts. I'm so pissed at myself for being such an idiot. I try to over-maintain and baby this truck and then i go and do something like this.....My wife can't be more impressed with my mechanical prowess. I'm sure my wife's boyfriend will have a good laugh at my expense.

    Thanks for any insight/mocking/ridicule.

Sounds like you had your wife shut it down pretty quickly. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. The grinding feeling was probably just the pump being starved for a brief moment. She will live.

You are probably fine with the exception of the humiliation you suffered.

My 96 had a pretty bad PS leak when I got it, so it would end up running low on fluid almost constantly (yeah, I know, I was not the smartest 16 year old). I fixed the leak and it has never given me issues or grinded/felt bad. Yours will probably be just fine, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I feel much better. I tried to flush it to keep it functioning well and then thought I broke it….or at least reduce its life expectancy. Lesson learned and will make sure I do the research before the next project.

You're probably fine. I just pull the lower reservoir hose and drain the reservoir and refill every few months. Eventually, you'll have some pretty fresh fluid in there and the risk is minimal.
These trucks are pretty tough. It's not like you drove it low for a couple of weeks. Just watch the level and enjoy your awesome Taco.

    None... yet.
I guarantee that 99.92% of us on here have done something that, half a second later, we had major regrets about. I've been wrenching on my own vehicles for over 2.5 decades (wow, that hurts to type out!) and I still have those moments 2-3 times a year. You are good company and most here are very understanding!

And, just to reinforce what previous posters said: "It's fine, everything is fine!" :nuclear:

Yes, we've all done it. Well, maybe not that exact thing, but we've all done it.
    It's how we learn.
When my son (who is now 30) was about 10, we were talking about something someone did, that was stupid. He said, "sometimes, the burned finger is the best teacher". I was astounded and proud of that statement, coming from someone so young. Yes, I patted myself on the back.

You should be fine, assuming the pump wasn't making grinding noise beforehand and that the grinding noise has not returned.
I did a similar thing unexpectedly very quickly flushed the power steering fluid when I didn't have my jackstands or as many smarts(I sure hope I have more smarts now).
The nice thing about hydraulic power steering fluid systems is its pretty hard to break assuming you don't run it dry for extended periods, no need to purge air like the brake fluid just keep topping off the fluid till the level stats constant.

The "grind" feeling was just air that got into the PS pump vanes. It'll purge out on its own (it probably already has). You're fine.
