Hey everyone, new to Toyotas and the forum. I just bought a 2007 Tacoma access cab for my dad. Its a 2wd automatic with the 2.7L 2TRE and has 125,000 miles on it.

On the way back home after the purchase, it stopped shifting into 4th gear. The strange part is that there is no check engine light or codes present. I did notice that when selecting gears with the shifter, the indicator lights in the instrument cluster will light up when going from P to R to N but when I put the shifter from N to D. The indicator light in the cluster will jump from N to 3. The lights work fine when the shifter is in 3, 2, and L.

I tried disconnecting the battery overnight. Disconnecting and touching the negative and positive terminals. Fluid is clean and level is good. Wiring looks great, It doesn't look like if anyone's been down there. When inspecting the outside of the transmission, the side plate shows 30-40LS.

Transmission works great other then it doesn't shift into 4th. No hard shifting/shifting in any other gear. I've read atleast 100 threads with A340E with similar issues, but none that were quite like this one.

Are you saying that when in "D" that it shifts no higher than 3rd gear. It's a 5 speed. 5th is OD. I may misunderstand your post, but you may just have a light bulb burned out and it doesn't illuminate when the shifter is in 4.

That's right, when in D, it won't shift past 3rd gear. It's like if the computer is skipping D altogether when looking at the instrument cluster lights. When the shifter is in nuetral, the light on the cluster illuminates the N. When moving the floor shifter from N to D position, the light on the cluster goes from N light to 3 light.

Sounds like you have an issue with the D/3 switch in the shifter (Shift Lock Control ECU), the ECM thinks you have it in 3 so it won't shift past 3rd.

Can confirm, my 2.7 auto is only 4 gears

Dm93, thanks for the wiring diagram. It looks like the shifter switch has a pole for P R N D 2 L. On my floor shifter, the D and 3 position are lateral. I'm wondering how it knows when the shifter is in the D position and then laterally moved left to the 3 position. Based on the wiring diagram looks like D and 3 share the same pole?

The D/3 switch is in the shifter itself not on the transmission.

Right on, I completely missed that. I'm going to look for that switch and report back. Thanks a bunch.

That switch and the shift interlock are both housed in the Shift Lock Control ECU, I don't know if it can be taken apart and cleaned/fixed or not. I've never been in one and mine is a manual.

Fantastic, once I get off work I'll check that out. I'm hoping it's this and not an internal transmission problem. Dm93 thanks again, I'll update as soon as I get my hands on it.

I really suspect it's the switch in the shifter being you said D does not light up but 3 does.

Alright, so I went and replaced the whole shifter mechanism, and now the truck runs great and goes through all the gears. Dm93 thanks for all your help, you really saved the day for me . I came back to update so if anyone else has the same issue as me, they will have an idea what it could be.
