Nothing missing, you have a TRD OffRoad model with the hydraulic brake booster/ABS unit.

The standard ABS unit goes in that location on non-TRD OffRoad models with the vacuum brake booster.

Prior to 09 only models with VSC had the hydraulic booster, VSC became standard on Tacomas in 09. On 09+ only TRD OffRoad/Pro models have the hydraulic brake booster/ABS unit, all others have a standard vacuum booster and ABS unit.

Mine is a trd off road and the abs module is there. The hydraulic brake booster is for models that have the a-trac, vsc system.

See my above post, VSC was optional (pretty uncommon to see one in the wild) on 03-08 models. Those early models with VSC had the hydraulic brake booster/ABS unit, after VSC became standard in 09 only TRD OffRoad/Pro models had the hydraulic brake booster/ABS unit and yes A-Trac is standard on 09+ TRD OffRoad/Pro but didn't exist prior to 09.

Looks pretty clean under the hood but did you take a look at the frame for rust? That's one of the biggest things to look for before buying.
Also if it's 4wd make sure that works.

I didn't say they don't exist but don't see them very often as it wasn't a very common option even on TRD OffRoads.

I dont mean to criticize the helpful responses here, but I think it would be helpful to refer to this configuration as having the "electronic" brake booster rather than the "hydraulic" brake booster.

All Tacomas have hydraulic brakes, with some sort of power-assist mechanism to help amplify the pedal force, a.k.a 'power brakes.'

Tacomas without VSC, such as mine, as well as most all vehicles made from the mid 20th century until recently, used a vacuum booster. Fully mechanical brakes, no electricity used for normal braking (other than the brake lights I guess). But they are augmented with a separate ABS module on newer vehicles, which includes an electric pump, to modulate and pump up the brakes during ABS activation. Installed in the location photographed above on these trucks.

More recently, automakers have transitioned to electronic brake boosters. These replace the mechanical vacuum booster with essentially an electronic pump suitable for full-time brake booster needs. ABS is integrated directly within this type of booster. And in Tacomas, this is the version that provides VSC.

For what it's worth, I've read that the electric version provides far-better brake pedal responsiveness. The vacuum version is spongy and weak, at least for towing, or with big tires!

    Both systems are hydraulic brakes.

    Pedantic, I know... sorry.

The frame is solid with a little rust around the welds.

agreed... hardly see any early 2nd gens with that package (not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing.)
