Who’s switched from Tacoma to Tundra?

I just did. I just got a 2011 DC Rock Warrior just over a month ago, because my '97 Tacoma was totaled in an accident. I used the money from the insurance for the down payment. I still have the Tacoma and fixed it to where it's driveable again.

 

Beautiful! Any cons to the new purchase?

 

Ok so I have a similar challenge. I have a 21 TRD Sport with TRD lift. Love the truck but recently fell into doing a lot of construction repair work on the side for a friend and turned into a second job/ business. Used the Tacoma for the last year but it just can’t handle the day to day weight I carrry. Would love to stay Yota but just don’t know if the Tundra will cut it.
Need at least a 6 ft bed and my everyday payload is min 700lbs.
Wish they made a 3/4 ton

 

Major one, wife keeps taking it and leaving me with her Highlander lol. None really, parking can be harder with a larger/ longer vehicle. However it’s may more comfortable and the power is band phenomenal.

Tried to like the 4th gen Tacoma, I just never warmed up to it. I really showed Toyota by buying a Tundra I guess.

 

I might head back into a Tundra Platinum w/ TRD off road package too. Just not sure if it will be a hybrid or not. Lots of deals to be had for the Tundras though! $2000-$7000 off!

 

I ended up getting almost 10k off. Mine is a non hybrid.

I know Tundras have gotten dragged through the mud lately and rightfully so, but I'm betting Toyota gets its act together and hopefully they did so before I bought mine lol. I tried to time the truck market I guess.

I can't even begin to describe how nice the Tundra Platinum is, just unbelievable.

This is how I felt, did you drive them back to back? To me they drove so similar I would rather have the Tundra's interior and size, not to mention the price after negotiating was so close.

 

Yep, twice I drove them back to back at different dealers. I felt like the Tundra drove smaller than it is while the 4th gen drove bigger than it was causing me to ponder why even bothering with the smaller truck?

I ended up going Platinum, so the price argument went out the window, but early in my search the Taco was within spitting distance of the Tundra in models I was looking at. Happened when I test drove the Ranger, then F150 as well. Pricing nowadays makes it hard to get a midsizer unless that's what you just want IMO. Turns out, I didn't really want one.

 

Didn't even know it had them until the next day playing with the screen. Dealer never said a peep about them.

I find them to be nice, but unnerving as it is a new feature for me and I prefer to feel the road as is.

Wife loves them though...

 

I have a bad back so on long road trips a built in massage feature is a God send I hear rumors 2026 might be a refreshing year for the Tundras. Hope it doesn't go too crazy

 

Seats are crazy good coming from the Tacoma. I have like 5 or 6 different massage types with differing intensities and my Platinum even has leg a leg rest thing on the front that can extend out to take pressure off your legs??? It's like driving from a recliner when fully extended haha.

Coming from a base '17 Taco OR to this Tundra is mind blowing.

8 year product run sounds about right for a Toyota so mid cycle refresh would be right there. You're probably right.

 

I started with this from 2004 to 2025. It had 374,561 miles on it. It was in pristine condition and needed no repairs.



Two weeks ago I collided with another vehicle and this was the result.


My mechanic was kind enough to sell me his Tundra for the price he paid. Today, I’m making some mods and am the proud owner of this 2006 SR5 Crew Cab 4.7 V8 and I’m very happy with it. It drives and feels like a Tacoma not an oversized yacht, sits a little higher and handles beautifully. More to come.

 

Very nice, congrats! She's a beaut, Clark! I was shopping Tundras last fall but never ended up pulling the trigger. I was shopping the LC250 and new Taco also, so I'm all over the map, lol. I love my current Taco, but I'm wanting something more comfortable/roomy for DD and road trips. Plus, my wife can't drive stick so having an automatic again would help. I was shopping the Limited with OR package, but I didn't realize that the Platinum can be had with the OR package too. The LC is really nice, but I'm not sure I need another SUV and I think the Tundra is the better value proposition. Like you, I'm not really a fan of the 4th Gen Taco but if I'm being fair, I should probably look at it a bit harder if I'm going to upgrade.

Anyway, question for you...did you take anything off the Taco or just trade it in as is? That was one of my hang ups last fall when shopping; I would like to convert my truck mostly back to stock to trade it in, but I didn't have the time to mess with the work involved and trade in quotes were all over the map. I get that you can't expect extra value for mods, but I also don't want to give shit away for free. Just curious what your experience with trading the Taco was... Again, congrats!

 

I would very much like a ‘21 tundra. Short bed crew cab . Everything after that looks ridiculously thin to me. Pretty rare for me to find one (222-24) I actually think is nice.

Thanks. Definitely try out the 4th gen, there is a lot to like there. I really just didn't like the motor or interior space.

I left my truck kitted out. I was going to remove the Prinsu and 4runner wheels, but ended up not. I got a decent amount on trade in and was happy to not have to mess with it anymore honestly. Since I was making a move during Toyotathon and end of year stuff, I didn't have time really either. Truck I ended up getting was a "buy it now" type deal and that was that.

I still have my stock 3rd gen OR wheels, original stock OR suspension, 2nd gen Pro suspension, HD Dakars.... and a ton of other things in my storage lol. I kept everything to return it to stock when selling it...

 

It's been like 2º here for awhile, I 'll get some when it warms up lol.

I looked for a nice 2.5 gen before buying my '25, but found none I thought were worth the money being asked.

I'll get a new pic soon, this is about it though.

I got the front windows and windshield tinted a week ago and it looks killer now.

 

Thanks for sharing the experience. I also kept all of my stock parts minus my OR wheels. I think part of me didn't want to go out and source the wheels, swap in the TPMS, etc. plus do all the other work going back to stock just to turn around and try to sell all the take offs. Might just cut my losses when I upgrade.

I think I'm going to go back and take another look at the 4th Gen next month...not sure if I can get over my dislikes for the interior, when the Tundra is sitting there and I like everything about it (minus the price).
