The shop that rebuilt the engine thought it was part of the Cam Phaser but they determined it was not. At the moment they want to remove the timing cover to see if they can find anything related to the broken pieces. i don't know if this is tied to the Oil leak or a completely separate issue.....But What a MESS. I'm going to make sure they see everyone's feedback. Maybe you all can shed some light on this. BTW yes, the quoted posts were also me with regards to the Rear Main Seal. I (as well as others involved) are shocked at this plethora of issues.

I would just find myself a good used engine, swap it, and forget about all the troubles this one has caused.

I was going to say the diameter looks about right for a cam bearing / journal. The width is off for that though. Would also be pretty unlikely for one of those parts to make it from the top end to the bottom end. Easy enough to check by taking the valve cover off. So I'm leaning towards bottom end components.

Could it be from the oil pump? One of the pieces on the right side facing up looks like it has a groove through it. Is that a rotational wear groove or a part of manufacturing? As pointed out all sides of this are squeaky clean. Like all sides are a wear surface and immune from that slight yellow orange tinge that oil leaves over time.

Agreed - this is the kind of thing that would make me second guess the truck every time something minor happened. Is this the end? Is she coming unwound?
New truck or new engine time and definitely new shop time because I'm 50/50 that this is shady until they can explain it.

Is the place that is trying to find the oil leak, and found the pieces, the same place that rebuilt the engine?
Who's paying for the labor on the search for the "missing pieces"?

    This might get expensive fast....

Depending on who's paying for it.
The fix might be to throw the broken parts in the trash, re seal the oil pan, and hope for the best.
Taking an engine a part for inspection isn't too far off of rebuilding it again.

Throwing it back together and hoping for the best might not be a bad option.
It will either self diagnose, or be ok.......

The place that i removing and reinstalling the engine is different from the place that rebuilt it. The removal and reinstall is only a few hundred dollars as a repeat issues. The rebuild place (BTW this is all they do for 20 years is rebuild engines) also has a warranty for their work but as of now the issues do not appears to be related to the work that was done on the rebuild. So for example the Cam Phaser was not a part replaced in the rebuild as they didn't deem is necessary... and NEVER heard of them failing in Tacomas. If the broken parts were the Cam Phaser it would be like 1200 to replace them for OEM parts labor as it was not part of the initial rebuilD. As of now I was looking at around the same cost to replace the OEM timing cover which will also allow them to dig deeper. Pretty much all the work up to this point was covered under the lawsuit money. However now it going to be on me. The lawsuit repairs in addition to Pre-Purchase work (all out of Honda's pocket) it probably close to 15k. Im so hesitant to throw all that away....its almost like there is more new tuck now than old.

    The phaser rings do fail.
But they don't look like your pieces.
    The hunt continues.....

When you first found the truck for sale at the Honda dealer was it listed AS IS / NO WARRANTY?

Did they offer a guarantee for the drivetrain on a 109k mile vehicle?
