My 1997 Tacoma with the 5vz-fe is having a super strange misfiring issue. I took it on a 700 mile drive, where it run like butter. Near the end, I noticed the RPM’s slightly dipping a couple times, but nothing extreme, so i assumed it was an electrical glitch and since it didn’t happen again i brushed it off.

Fast-forward a week, and it started doing it on the highway again, except this time much more extreme fluctuation, and the check engine light came on. It balanced back out, however, and I was able to make it to a parking lot where I could read the codes. It threw only p1300, “boost calibration fault: cylinder #1 igniter circuit fault”

I switched cyl 1 coil with cyl 3 and still threw cyl 1. Only this time, the engine stalled as soon as I started it. Problem only happens if engine is warm... Now, I’m unsure if p1300 is specific to cyl 1, or if cyl 1 means something different in this context? The temperature is pointing to a coil problem but codes stayed the same. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For anyone else having the same issue, my issue was due to intermittent connection to the coils. Was so focused on cyl 1 coil didn’t even notice cyl 5 was halfway unplugged. Must have vibrated loose or something, honestly still scratching my head over it.

Why not? If you switch the secondary wires that relate to the cylinder they work alongside, there’s no issue in switching coils.
