I know all that. With my old Tundra every time I went to the dealer, the mats would be in the back seat area. The truth is that it was retarded drivers, but Toyota ponied up for PR reasons.

There was a separate issue with the Prius at the same time, where the car would stop and think for bit before applying the brakes when you hit the brake pedal.

The fallout from the recalls is actually where the 24 months of free oil changes came from, they needed something to win some customers back.

Back on topic. The only place any of my radio and electrical work touches the OEM stuff is that I have a sense wire on my Uniden SDS200 that dims the display when the headlights are on. I piggybacked that off of the taillight fuse. No wire cutting involved, no tapping involved. Just the fuse holder.

From other threads on here, it seems that the CANBUS can be very sensitive to aftermarket electronics. I recall one person who installed aftermarket map lights without disconnecting the battery and had all sort of issues.

I'm much more cautious with this than I was with my '06 Tundra or my wife's '07 Highlander. She has a RAV4 XLE Premium now and I won't touch at thing on it other than engine and cabin air filters. ;)

I know and I'd like to put a set of BFG ATKO2/3's on it but before I change anything, I want to see it running right so I'll know what the change is from. If I did what you have done, I'd be in the high 6 to 7 MPG range.

Oh I get it. I completely remember when that happened.
I'm constantly amazed at how well they detail the inner workings of the floor mat and then all they did for trouble shooting the real issue was check for codes and take'er for a spin!

I just want someone to bring that Big Floor Mat Energy to my Engine Problem.

I get about 18 MPG around town and can do 22-23 on the highway with my 2019 TRD OR 4x4. All stock except for sliders, a beefier skid plate, and a cab-high shell.
FWIW, I was talking with a friend who is very tuned in to things in Japan, and he stated that the workforce has deteriorated in last few years. Lots of unhappy workers and a lot of people brought in from out of Japan. He believes Toyota QC has suffered as a result.

Good thing the Tacoma is made across the border from San Diego just south of Tijuana in Baja Mexico.

I remember on the news here (might have been national) someone calling Toyota from their car with the issue happening and being told to put it in neutral; they refused as they didn't want to put their phone down. Nuff said.

No thanks, that would make me lose my appetite on top of it

True, but where are the parts made? Maybe elsewhere, IDK.

My 2024 has three unassigned buttons that I can add aftermarket accessories to. Maybe look at the schematic for those and duplicate Toyotas approved power supply method for your Radio? Or - use their own design to show your install was no different?

Made the drive yesterday - Left early to make sure I had clear traffic. And it was RAINING in PHOENIX! Traffic out the wazoo. I'll post up pics but I don't think it was a good test because average speed was something ridiculous like 45mph. No stop and go just crawling along for much of the drive. BUT! At 45 MPH agv, the MPG was pretty sweet. Maybe that's the trick. Keeper under 50.

Tomorrow I have to go into Tempe. We'll see what that drive is like.

Just to add fuel, my daughter has a 2020 TRD Off Road, 3.5L automatic, bone stock.
We visited her in Minot, ND and went to Teddy Roosevelt State Park. It was a couple of hours each way and we averaged 19-20 mpg.

Discovered the same thing last summer when we went to the coast. Got better MPG at 45-50 on the country roads, even with curves and hills, than we did on the flat highway at 65.

I can’t emphasize enough how sensitive this truck is to certain conditions. The last two days of the exact same route yielded over 2mpg difference. The less mpg day was a bit windy and it can make a real difference. Even letting your truck idle for 5 minutes to warm up can drop the trip MPG substantially depending on the distance. Looking forward to see what you come up with.
