2GR-FKS burnt valves and blown gaskets octane related?

Finally this is brought up. It falls apart and some parts get sucked into the intake valve and there goes the cylinder and engine!

 

I think it was going between 26.0 and 27.0. I have no idea what that value means relative to anything. Also, weather was in the low 30's Fahrenheit, if that plays a factor.

 

The piece is known to fall down into an intake runner, however, I haven’t seen any cases where it causes any actual confirmed problems. It seems to be too large of a part to fall into the engine through the valve opening.

 

Did you save your old coils?

The RIPP coils long term reliability is less than stellar.

 

These numbers can be achieved on tuned ECU running 87 calibration. 2 examples are 2 years apart. Cold air does help

Don’t run Avgas in a modern vehicle. The lead in it will not play well with the cat converter

 

I have seen posts here about it. on each end where the flapper connects there is a small metal bushing and i saw a pic here where it was laying in the bottom. it could easily have got sucked in. just IMO

 

Regarding the FKS compression ratio and higher cylinder pressures - this has to do with the direct injection. All cars with direct injection run a higher static compression than port injected-only engines. With the injector in the cylinder, it cools the cylinder and air charge and, as a side effect, acts as a octane increaser. So, you can run a higher static compression with no ill-effects on DI engines.

 

64k ish miles and climbing. I'm on my 3rd set of spark plugs and #1 & #3 plugs always come out with lean indications. I've always used 87 from Shell, Costco or Mobil and the occasional bottle of Lucas deep clean fuel system cleaner.

I think I'll try a higher octane for a bit out of curiosity.

 

I know what happens when the flap falls apart...the bushing falls down into an intake runner and sits on an intake valve. However, I've seen numerous reports of people finding the bushing down in there and have seen none of them reported as having made their way into the combustion chamber. I have to imagine the gap when the valve is fully open is too small for the bushing to fall through. Plus, the only known valve problems on this engine are on the exhaust side anyways.

That said, of course I agree that if the flap falls apart and you have to deal with it, you best dig down and fish that bushing out as well.

 

Going to bump this thread/add to this...

I filled up with 91 at Costco this afternoon. I'm not sure why I didn't try this sooner. (9 years of running 87)

I was only able to put about 12 gallons in as it was slightly under a half tank, but the truck runs so much happier with 91 octane. Easier starts, smoother acceleration/idle, crispier throttle note and throttle response and it even seems to shift a tad better.

I'll be running 91 from now on.

 

Ive been saying this for years

 

I use Costco premium, I was using 87 and it felt slow with initial throttle response, switched to premium for a few tanks and I felt a slight improvement. Switched to regular for a few and the difference in response was enough for me to keep running premium. The change is noticeable, but not like my "Lexus running on regular" noticeable.
