Why not connect it to a circuit that is only hot when it's running. Maybe use an add a fuse at the fuse box.

That's a great place to put it. I put mine inside the bed on the bedside, I like this better.

I had always assumed that the port powered down when the vehicle is switched off but I guess it is my obdii bluetooth dongle that shuts itself down when it sense the vehicle turning off. Does your HUD not have an option to do that or does it work with any bluetooth dongle? I know I have left mine connected for extended periods without draining the battery.

By splitter, I assume you are saying you either have a Y connector on the J1962 plug (OBD II Connector), or you have installed a second J1699. It is a very easy connector to pop the pins out of. If it was mine, I would remove pin 16 from the truck side of the connector you are using for the BT Dongle and I would replace it with a pin connected to an IGN+ wire. This way it would only be on when the ignition is on.

You can also just cut and splice the wire. Pin 16 is Battery +. Heck you could change it on the main plug and then both the other plugs would only be hot with the key on. That power connector there is only for whatever external tool you connect, so if you don't need it to be on when the key isn't on, change it out.

Ugh that sucks. Happened to mine in a parking lot a couple years ago. I only found out who it was because a Good Samaritan watched it happen and forced the high schooler who hit my truck to leave their contact info. Allegedly they were trying to get away without leaving any info.

I do that too. Especially when I'm driving my Vette. Many times some jerk is parked close right next to me. One time I had to crawl in from the back through the back hatch. The world is full of idiots not like us on this forum.

That looks so good. I don't need ditch lights, but they look so good.

Ugh. My condolences. Not a fan of Teslas, but I do like their cameras for events like this...

There are quite a few but I’m afraid I might have been in one of the spots they don’t see much of. They weren’t allowed to pull footage for me without police there, so I filed a report and the cop said he would go watch the footage and see if he finds anything.

Well, I tend to wander my truck around potholes to avoid them. And in general I've found larger and boxier vehicles (like SUVs and trucks) to be more susceptible to wind. I've also found that with wider tires contacting more of the road they can pick up more variations (the worst for me are the ruts from semis). Finally, a 70 or 75 tire is going to absorb more bumps while not handling anything like a 40 or 50 series tire.
Obviously I'm not a suspension expert but these seem like truck things (especially an off-road capable truck) more than issues. It's all about tradeoffs for the conditions. A quality sports sedan will handle much better on the highway but won't get me to my favorite rocky mountain spots.
