    Hello guys,

My Tacoma suddenly started this noise after I was driving normally, and engaged the gear to backup, so the belts started to make a lot of noise, the car started jerking but moved like 5 meters into my driveway and died. Got message of low oil pressure and transmission high temp at the same time. I tried to start once but didn't, so I later tried again and it started roughly and runned normally. I drove again and noticed this noise, and is very loud cold. The truck drives jerking a little bit when driving about 70 km/h.

I have one guy with the truck, at first he said it was bad gas, changed the plugs and added additive to the gas, but it didn't change nothing. He suggested me to buy a new engine.

Did you guys ever seen something like this. It's a 2020 TRD sport 3.5 V6 AT with 155.000km (about 100.000 miles).

Thank you so much for you help

did you even check the oil?
Cant isolate give you an accurate diagnosis from just a video of it idling...
Could be a completely wasted rod bearing but need a video of you aggressively rapping on the throttle like a light switch...
Try to make the noise louder & change with rpm an you flip the light switch on & off....

If it gets worse & very raspy, you repeat the process by killing the cylinder somehow, eliminating spark or fuel, if noise lessens alot, its a rod bearing...
gas, plugs, additive, wasnt going to fix that...

Hi, yes the mechanic changed the oil, and it had clear and on the level oil, the truck is still at the shop, since the mechanic sent the video to a mechanic at Toyota dealership the seek some answers from them. I am willing to pickup the truck this week to show to someone else.

When the engine warms up, the noise almost disappears, but driving you can hear, but not so loud, but it's there.

Once I get the truck I will make another video as you said. It's hard to believe the engine is gone, very strange.

    Thank you for your help

I'll answer in here so we can bounce ideas off other members.

I feel like its a top end oil pressure issue, has it ever had any major work done? Timing cover?

There's a few ways to diagnose this sound.

I would disable the cylinders one by one seeing if the sound goes away, that would indicate a piston/con rod as there would be no combustion.

If the noise stays constant is usually means top end, which for some reason I feel like this is. Its hard to tell without being there.

I'd probably take a valve cover off and look at clearances and check rockers as a second step depending.

Either way it needs an experienced mechanic next. Spark plugs simply never fix a sound like this.

That sound like a HPFP DI noise so I'm wondering if you have an issue with it. It really doesn't sound like it's an internal lower engine sound like a crank bearing or rod knock. It's noisier when cold which would be in line with what you are hearing. The engine idling to low could cause other faults to code.

Hi, I have This truck for 14.000 km, and I bought from a dealer, so I can't tell if something major was done, I believe nothing was done before and I never did anything, just oil change 6.000km ago. The truck never acted weird or anything, always good, until this day. I found odd when he said it was the gas, but I had hopes, he mentioned a code of misfire only, but after changing the plugs, the truck still jerking.

The option to disable the cylinders to check is what a will do once I get the truck back. I don't have the tools or garage to work, but I have some understanding, so
I did listened both heads touching the tip of a screwdriver and the other end on my ear, and I didn't hear the taping, just the sound of movement.

Thank you for your help, you guys are very knowledgeable, the mechanic I brought the truck is known for working with Toyotas, but he mentioned that's not worth to work on these newer engines, just the older ones. At least now I can see that the noise is most likely from inside and I will seek carefully who to work on the truck.

    Thank you so much!

The sound got louder when the camera panned to the high pressure fuel pump on the passenger side near the firewall. That would be my first suspect as far as diagnosing a noise by Internet goes...

There's also a vacuum pump on the engine in the same area that can go bad around your mileage. Its replacement interval is 100,000 miles in Toyota's maintenance booklet.

Never had issue with the truck, I heard it could be also the vacuum pump, but mine sounds louder than what I have seen on YouTube.

Yes, the faulty codes I believe too it was because the truck was dying and moving at the same time, even I was just backing up.

    Thank you

Right! I saw Toyota has an issue with vacuum pump. Maybe I will have to end up going to Toyota, but not all the time they have the best specialists, and I am from a small town, usually they have less experience, I think.

    Thank you for your help

Maybe? unlikely, it could be VVTI noise due to oil issues, could be the vacuum/fuel pump, could be many things.

A rocker rattling around would make sense though.

A piston would suck, hope its not that.

I get this tapping noise as well at idle. I know it is not the hp pump( live obd2 data) and the noise is not around the vaccum pump.
I saw a comment on other thread there a dealer narrowed down to a power steering pump.

    Hello guys, some update!

I brought my truck to another guy I know for a while and at first he couldn't figure it out where the noise was coming from, so I got all of your messages here and sent to him, and he came back to me today saying that it's the vacuum pump because he did test the cylinders as you guys told and the noise didn't go away, and with the the stethoscope he heard louder close to the vacuum pump. He charged me more than $500 to diagnose thanks to you guys, but I am now having second thoughts about his diagnosis. He quote the vacuum pump at $2.200 + tax and labor, and I ended up going to Toyota to ask how much and they quoted me $1.500 + tax and labor.

I asked if he was sure the noise was going to go away and he was not able to promise me.

I think I will have to bring to Toyota and pay them to diagnose just the vacuum pump before replacing. It will be cheaper with them, I think.

I appreciate your guys help, and I will keep you posted of the next chapters. I hope this post can help someone with the same situation in the future.
