I did a very small patch of this as an experiment. I planted very late, end of September.
They HAMMERED these all the way till it got to zero for temps.
I will plant again this year and make the plot much bigger and stagger the plantings.

My BIL said it's like cocaine for deer...he was right!

so since ya can't bait or create food plots on USFS, I like to find the big old oak that they've been coming to for generations. This one was in a spot so choked with beautyberry and yaupon that it was obvious they were keeping it cropped to better get at the acorns.

Do you own the property that you hunt, or do you lease. If you own it, I don't see why you have to pay for out of state. I know, you don't live there but dam, that just ain't right.

The only way (I think) that he could still get resident permits would be by having a mailing address in Texas. Which may be something to consider.....

I own it. I grew up on it. I still pay taxes on it :annoyed:

Texas doesn’t have any way for me to hunt it as a resident aside from me establishing myself as a Texas resident again. Sadly, my business is in North Carolina so that’s just not in the cards for a few more years

I’ve talked to game wardens, the Wildlife commission, and other hunters. If there’s a loophole I haven’t found it in a decade plus lol

Maybe look into setting up a P.O. box there? I'm definitely not postive it would work but I've 'heard' that people do that. Just a thought....

lol I’ve explored all the options.

I’d have to establish an address (not hard), live there 6 continuous months (tough while running a business and having a wife and two young ish kids), then make sure I’m there for a minimum of 180 days every year.

Texas is weird about their residency. Even when stationed in the state on active duty you still had to wait six months

I do think active military gets really cheap tags though regardless of residency

So I'm curious, where do you hunt, on private land, or public land? If on public that is truly impressive. If on private how many acres? How much control do you have over it? If a limited amount of private how much around you is private? Because it goes without saying the more you control the property you hunt on the better the results are going to be. That said those are still some impressive dear.

Also, I would assume that you had never seen those deer before right? You had never passed on them when they were younger?

I've tried several things and several ways, plowing, discing, etc. The easiest thing is lightly scratch it and throw out clover seed. Turkeys and deer both love clover, if you can get it established. It has to have water to get going.
