Recently bought my 2nd Tacoma, 96 3.4 4x4 manual from a single owner with 200k miles. Been chasing an oil leak for a bit with it. I did the vcg, and can confirm that it’s not the cam plugs, oil cooler, or anything above the block. I took the time to clean everything up underneath and ran some dye through the oil. Here’s what I found, where the oil pan meets the bell housing there’s a substantial leak, trying to decipher if it’s the rms or oil pan gasket?? There’s a bit of oil on the inside lip of the bell housing but not much. Any thoughts are appreciated

If you want extra confirmation of a rear main seal leak, get an inspection camera and point it at the output shaft. You should see some green glow around the shaft somewhere. I took my truck to the Toyota dealer chasing a leak and they even replaced the oil pan gasket twice before I discovered the leak was actually at the rear main seal.

I'm in the same boat here. I know my VCGs need to be done and parts are on order for that but I also am concerned its the oil pan gasket or possibly the RMS. When I swapped in the A340F, there was no discernable leakage from the RMS (hard to tell from these photos but all I have in the old file). Everyone says to change it if you have the transmission out but I didn't want to mess with it. Kind of regret that decision since now I might have to pull the transmission all over again. Kind of just crossing my fingers and waiting to see if the VCGs are enough once I do that job.

    :fingerscrossed:

At 200k RMS would be my suspicion.

    Good diagnosis process!

I’m also leaning toward rms, but an inspection camera back there is a good idea. Hoping it’s not both either, the drips on the left and right where the pan sits throws me off as well

When I had a rear main seal go out on a vehicle with a manual transmission the clutch started slipping.

    Check/replace your PCV valve first.

Are you sure it's not still the valve cover gaskets leaking. Oil seems to find its way down to that bottom point on the engine.
