IMG_9593.jpg IMG_9595.jpg What’s up guys, new to the forum.

I’m looking for some recommendations, ideas etc.

So my Tacoma ran low on oil, and some not so pleasant noises followed by rough idling, driving, and accelerating lead to it getting parked. After sitting for a year when I finally could work on it without dying inside. It started up, and would idle on its own. In P I could rev it up to around the 2000 rpm range, let off the gas and as the rpm’s dropped the noises came back but would hold idle. In D it was in limp mode. The only code I had was P0016 Camshaft Crankshaft Correlation bank 1 sensor A. Was still able to pull it around the house and into the garage. On tear down and inspection found the cam gear for bank 2 exhaust had sheered the knock pin and destroyed the center of the cam gear. From what can be seen without pulling the head, pistons are moving just fine, as do the valves. My question is, new camshaft or both camshafts in that same bank? Anything else I should check? I almost have the timing cover off, so not sure if or what is damaged down there. Before the cam was pulled apart, I was rotating everything from the crankshaft bolt and everything felt smooth, no grinding or anything. I know it’ll need retimed so I plan to get the whole kit to do that. Let me know what you guys think and thank you for any input or advice, and for reading this shit storm.

Can you give much more details on the engines history? How many miles. Year? Maintenance/repair history, good, bad, uncertain past life? Auto/manual? Street/4x4 life? Many/one owner? Etc...

Does that camshaft spin with a wrench on it?

Yes that cam spins with a wrench on it.

the owner before me was my friend and he neglected the he’ll out of it. But he only had it for around 20,000 miles. Before that his grandpa owned it and he took care of it religiously. He was the original owner up until he passed away and handed it down to my friend. It had around 150,000 miles, currently sitting at 174k. When I got it it had a blowen head gasket. I did the head gasket job, drove it for about 2 weeks, to SLC and back with no issues whatsoever. Put about 1000 miles on it. The small oil leak it had quickly turned into a big oil leak which lead me to where I am now.

Last night I put eyes on the pistons and they look fine. Moving freely, no damage or contact with the valves. I know it’s a non interference engine but I assume that’d still be important. From what I’ve found, it almost seems like the best way to go is put a remand head on it, instead of just the one cam.

Do you have a trusted supplier for heads? It's been very very dicey the last several years trying to find properly or even acceptably remanned heads, blocks, trans, anything really - hopefully if you don't already have a spot, someone can chime in with recent experience. I know there are some performance shops doing really good work with the 1GRs but they are $$$$ - comparable to just buying a new unit from Mr. Toyota.

Someone was in there, did they do the timing set when they re-sealed the cover? It's hard to imagine why that bolt would have had the freedom to back out otherwise.

Pull cam and check the journals.
