The shops not going to use a $86 dollar rock auto fuel pump. Shipping for that would bring it to say $100 and take 1-2 weeks to arrive with a questionable warranty process. I bought a ac actuator from rock auto and to warranty it out I had to buy a new one, replace the faulty one with the new one, pay for return shipping and took another week to get the refund.
Auto shops get parts from A)dealers or B)napa/autozone/ect. Availability same or next days for most parts. Waranty is easy, napa or whoever sends a new part over same or next day and the shop sends the faulty part back that week and doesn't have to pay for the warranty part at all.
Obviously labor rates range drastically based on where in the country, the $1200 for the fuel pump and $350 for the fuel filter does seem outrageous.
As a mechanic if I were replacing the fuel pump on a older vehicle I would require the fuel filter also be replaced, same as replacing a timing chain but not the tension and guides.

Thank you again for all the replies and info.

    Quick update:

I went ahead and had the shop do the replacement.

They ended up charging me $328.87 for the "fuel pump kit" and $761.15 for the labor involved in diagnosing, "removing fuel tank, replacing fuel pump and seal, and reinstalling fuel tank."

I took it in Wednesday morning and got it back Thursday afternoon.

I didn't have them replace the filter but may try to do that on my own.

I have a growing list of projects on this truck that I hope to tackle. Biggest current problem now is leaking in the power steering system.
