While installing an RCI front skid plate I came across this…not even sure what is…CV joint housing?

    How worried should I be?

Yes, that is the CV axle.
I personally wouldn't worry too much about it.

If you want you can apply a rust prohibitor, something like Woolwax or FluidFilm.

Spray some this Rust-Oleum reformer. I've used with success, but have to respray after a couple of years or depending on where you live.

...its bullshit on a brand new truck. I'd take it back and make them do it.

    That’s an outrage!!! Except it’s not…

Every new car will show surface rust in spots. The old drums used to show rust practically the day after you drove it home from the dealer, and yet, lasted the life of the truck w/o touching them.

If you spend a lot of time underneath and it irks you aesthetically, then as mentioned, there are a variety of easy fixes. Meantime we may need to open up a new thread discussing the difference between surface rust, and actual rot….

Nothing to worry about. Every CV axle has that exact rust.

They all have it. I spray mine with a rust inhibitor when I undercoat my trucks. Hard to keep it on as they spin fast and fling most of it off.

Well. There is no legal or neglect basis for this item. So that leaves out attorneys.

The other techniques that come to mind are bribery, conning, bullying or constant whining.

So you're right. I can't do it. :notsure:

Thanks for all the responses. I’m satisfied hearing that is not unusual, and not impending catastrophe.

For the record, you’ll see this across manufacturers for any unpainted cast iron components, commonly in the driveline. It oxidizes almost immediately.

It’s a totally different situation than rust that might be present on a painted steel frame.

...no, just knowing how to talk to people. I recently went to Toyota and showed them an issue, and they brought the manager of their body shop out to look at the fender to hood alignment of my girlfriends almost new rav 4, and shared my concerns, and they told us to stop back in an hour and when we did, it was properly aligned. ...this is just the latest example over the years, and when we got back there, me and the head body shop guy chatted about other stuff for probably 10 minutes.after....no hysterics, no one was embarrassed of shamed, and when it made it to the body shop guy, he absolutely agreed.

. ...you are well aware of your limitations, and that is a good thing, for you.

None of your description falls in your category of 'make them' which is a bully term and was your starting position.

My references all related to 'make them'.

Polite asking, relationship building and conversation, as you now describe, can often work. But it's certainly not 'make them'.

I noticed this on a few and had the same start on my '21 Tundra. It looks like crap and eventually the rust will creep under the boot which technically won't cause issues but any corrosion isn't great for sealing surfaces.
Anywhere there is salt or brine applied to the road it tends to speed the corrosion process on plated or bare surfaces.
Working in the commercial and sport marine industry for decades I've tried almost every rust preventative compound. Fluid film is decent but messy as hell, LPS 3 about the same. Boeshield is thin and good for underhood battery terminals and ground connections.

I've been testing CRC Heavy Duty Corrosion Inhibitor for about 5 yrs and find it's one of the better rated and performing products out there for coating your frame, suspension and chassis components while allowing easy future disassembly if required.
The CRC dries well, doesn't attract dust bad, doesn't fly off or wash off easily, and seals/prevents corrosion very well.

.....you took it literally to be an ass, and that is fine, as perhaps you were bored that day, or maybe that is just who you are. . ...either way. it doesn't make a difference to me, as the world needs chumps too, so carry on, sport.....
