Would spray paint work on blacking out my 02 chrome grill? If not, what would work in making the chrome black?

Not for very long. I suppose you could try sandblasting it first

Most of these aftermarket grill options have fit issues but there is always this -

That was after a quick search. I'm sure you can probably find cheaper if you do some looking.

If you do decide to paint it, prep will be key. Take your time, sand it, primer and then be sure to treat with a plastic adhesion promoter spray before painting.

I sanded my chrome grill, primed it then painted with Rust Oleum bed liner. I like it. It’s durable and retouching is easy

This should work fine, you just need to prep well. @Parkvisitor did you do anything there, just sand what you could get to or some other prep? Being plastic, it's possible acetone will melt the chrome layer off (untested, but I'd give that a shot as well.)

I didn’t sand all the chrome off, just a good scuffing and cleaning before any spray.
I did use adhesion promoter, don’t recall brand. Rust Oleum bed liner gives a little texture which I like.
