Well, Occam's Razor rules again. It never occur to me that it could be the filter. I guess I'll be sticking with the Toyota filter for my truck....
@OP, I am sure glad you found the issue.

This isn't going to happen to me, because I don't use questionable filters, BUT..
I'd be curious if it was actually the correct filter part number, but a shitty filter, or if O'Reilly's actually gave you the wrong filter altogether.
Did it match up to the old one, OP?

I don’t want to be a SA but I think I would have noticed the size difference and there should have been a lot of resistance when tightening the canister.

kinda looks like the core isnt strong enough and/or the filter material was too restrictive. during the years i know people have warned about after market filters so i have stuck with OEM for that reason. I dont believe ive seen a picture showing it as clearly.

This was actually my first oil change on this truck so I wasn’t sure how much tightening force was typical. It was a Mobil 1 M1C251A as stamped on the filter. I’ll probably order OEM ones in the future.

That's the right filter, but something seems amiss.

To be clear, was the perforated pipe in place, and did you use something close to the correct viscosity oil?
Additionally, I would think the bypass should have opened before something like this could have happened using the correct filter. Even a shitty one.

OP, @jmneill has brought up a good point do you remember sliding the filter over the perforated pipe inside the canister? According to the Mobil 1 part number you provided it’s the correct filter. If the tube is missing the new filter you just installed will collapse like the last one.

Make sure your canister looks like this on the inside.

Would there be any other way to put the filter on the housing?

It’s the first oil change for the OP and if the tube is missing he could have just put the filter in the housing and screwed it on. If he has never seen one before how was he to know it was missing if it was?

Is that what happens if you don't have the center tube? WOW!!!

Wow, tens of thousands of dollars almost down the drain.................I'd stick with Yota filters from now on myself.

It wouldn't have made any difference which filter he used if the OP didn't have the center tube in place.

No mine definitely doesn’t have a center tube like that. Can’t say for sure if it came with one and was lost during when the previous owner did an oil change or what. It had an oil change done at the dealership where I bought it, so it made it 5,000 miles without the tube. Where could I buy the tube?

OP, I’m not sure if it can be bought separately but you can get a new canister with tube for around 60.00. I was so afraid yours was missing cause your filter looks sucked in not crushed you did nothing wrong.

I wouldn’t drive your truck if possible until you get a new canister with tube.
