    Hello Tacoma World,

As the title states I am having an oil burning/consumption issue with my 2010 tacoma 4cyl. The truck has about 162,000 miles on it and is currently burning/consuming about 1 quart every 800 miles and is fouling spark plugs.

Some history on the truck and trouble shooting I have done:

Purchased about 1.5 years ago with 130,000 miles on it, when I got the truck I took the truck to Toyota and they did an inspection on it and recommended I get the spark plugs replaced, so I had them do the plugs. Everything was going smoothly for the next year or so.

Last winter I was driving home and heard a noise and it turns out I was low on oil, so I started checking my oil regularly each Sunday to make sure that issue didn't happen again. It retained its oil well and was able to make it through the 5,000 miles until the next change only adding about a quart of oil. Slowly it has begun to consume more oil over time and now I am putting about a quart of oil in every 800 miles or so. During this time I replaced the PCV valve but that didn't seem to fix the issue

Then about a month ago I was driving home from a trip and had a misfire on one of my pistons, so finished the drive slowly and took it to Toyota. When they checked the spark plugs they noticed that 1 had been fouled out and the others seemed to be getting close, covered in gunk. Following that they did a compression test which came back fine, and also checked my piston walls for scoring which they did not find. They also didn't see any leaking fluids in the engine bay. So they said I should either do the plugs every 6 months or start thinking about a new engine.

Please let me know if you have had this issue and found a remedy for it or if you have suggestions on what I should check on the truck. Thank you very much.

    Cheers,
    Skillet

Well that stinks, you’ve already checked what I would suggest. I’m sure some folks will chime in shortly with ideas…good luck!

    All stock, baby!
Gummed up rings, hardened valve stem seals, or a bad PCV valve (stuck open) are the usual suspects. Definitely check your PCV before you do anything else. It’s a one-way valve for crankcase gasses, so if you can blow through it from both directions, it’s stuck and you need to either replace it or clean it. Should rattle a bit when shaken.
