That's what we do around here in-between the "will these tires fit without rubbing" threads.

I just pack a handful of wadded up coffee filters in my intake box to save a few bucks.

Well, that would actually work to some degree. Better than nothing!

I heard if you use used coffee filters that are still damp with grounds they are nearly identical in performance to an oiled K&N. So I'll probably start doing that!

    Yeah.
I don't doubt that some people wash their filters this way, but there's a cleaning kit that has a fluid that you spray on before you run water through it. Likely just some kind of degreaser. You then have to let it dry before oiling. While that's going on, you just run a standard filter and suffer the HP loss.

The grounds go toward the intake, I presume?

It's been 30 years since the little ping pong ball & fan prop at the local auto parts store suckered me into a K$N, but even as a kid, having to sit your air filter out in the sun to dry before oiling was always a special treat.

One day after properly cleaning and oiling the 'ol cotton gauze gimmick, I held it up to the sun to realize I could have read the morning news through it, and that was kinda the end for me. Three decades of evidence later, I can't believe they're still selling..

Yes, K&N makes a proprietary degreaser, that at least in those days, was not quite as good as the worst degreaser on the market.

Yup! Coffee beans have a natural oil in them, perfect for lubricating the piston rings.

You must have stupid customers. If you follow the directions per KN it looks like new.

No it's a V6...just posted that to show that a bad MAS will surge your engine like that.

And yes I got suckered in to a K and N hoping to maybe improve fuel economy and get more juice. I won't defend myself on this one. To be honest, if anything I think it's been too long since I cleaned and oiled it. Maybe it was worthlessly dry and let too much crap through. Or maybe the sensor just went bad? Anyway, picking up my truck this morning. They say it's all good. I'm actually glad that's all it was. The way it was acting yesterday had me fearing for something worse.

I've been using K&N in my trucks for more than 20 years, never had a problem related to it. I put 200K on my Frontier, all with a K&N filter. My current one i clean and re-oil every summer, thats it....so maybe around 10K miles??
I don't pay attention to claims of HP gain or any of that crap, i use it because i don't have to pay much attention to it except that 1x a year.
If people don't like them or want to use them, that's fine, to each their own but we don't need to act like the world is ending when someone says they use one. It's not a big deal.

Are you new here or something?

    1. It's Friday
    2. Someone started talking about K&N filters

So yes, it IS a big deal, and the world IS ending.

    :duh:
