Truck lost power and threw a P0087 code, seems like the fuel pump lost a bolt. This is a '23 with only 17k miles so I'm pretty pissed. Just wondering if this is something that has happened to anyone before? Kind of blown away since I've been driving 25 years and had many cars and never seen something like this happen.

Welcome to TW. I don't recall anyone saying that they experienced this same issue, but you never know!

PS: were you able to fix it?
    PSS: sometimes shit happens

There is a TSB for anyone with fuel vapor smells from the HPFP for 10 years. Yours, you just may be unlucky. Take it to the dealer for warranty asap.

I wasn't able to fix it because the bolt was just..... gone. And it's under warranty so I'd prefer to have it done right and be on record with Toyota in case this leads to further problems down the road somehow from all the oil that sprayed out. I'll have to get it towed to the dealer during the week.

Yeah, let your warranty address it. Sorry for your troubles.

Spraying oil, from where? I thought we were talking about a fuel pump.

from experience & what ive seen on fords....
Look down the hole & see if the bolt broke....
They usually dont just come loose & completely fall out....
unless you removed it after you realized it was lose.

It felt/looked like oil to me (see the picture) but maybe it's just fuel.

I dont know shit about toyota engines...
But looks like a cam driven high pressure fuel pump...
So leaking oil makes sense, as its lubricated from engine oil, mounts top of valve cover area or its own pedestal, but its submerged into the engine....
gets lubed by splashing engine oil on top of the cam...
theres an orange or gasket, if its missing a bolt, its not making a seal....

That being said, the way im reading the recall, states nothing about broken bolts, stuff coming apart, etc...
the recall clearly shows they've had issues with pumps leaking fuel.
Not sure what to make of that & coverage.

OP, has anyone been in the engine for anything?
Theres alot of stress on those pump bolts as pump rides on came lobe..
Ive seen alot of trucks boomerang as some rookie techs didnt torque those bolts correctly.
I dont torque everything but I know what is a big deal, & not....
torquing this bolts properly is a very big deal as bolts are small & they deal with lots of stress, force, pressure, etc...

I don't see any rust so I am thinking either whoever did last service took that screw/bolt off OR it was never in there in a first place from the factory..

There is no way the bolt/screw unscrewed itself out of no where, someone did that sht on purpose or in factory they forgot

It's possible, I bought it used with just under 15k miles and it just hit 17k. I haven't had any work done myself but it has had some suspension mods. I don't see why anyone would have messed with the fuel pump bolts though....

When did you buy it? I would check other things too, who knows what else might be fked up. Fuel pump might have been replaced, which would make sense of missing bolt someone forgot

I bought it in August. I don't really see why anyone would have taken the shit in the engine bay apart on such a new vehicle.

I have a 23 TRD I’m going to take a look at mine tomorrow to be safe. I haven’t heard of this before but who knows with Toyota next they will be a recall for missing bolts on HPFP.

Perhaps the campaign detailed in the link in post #6 was already done before you bought the vehicle, and the dealer did it incorrectly. A unique possibility.

could very well be the case!
100%, totally makes sense to me....
Those bolts have to be torqued for this very reason & theres good mechanics, & very bad ones...
Theres alot that think theyre good....

Have the dealer review repair order history & actually show you...
Or better yet, call them on Monday & give them your vin without telling them the scenario....
Ask them you were internet surfing & want to know if the "high pressure fuel pump recall" was ever done to your vehicle...
Let them spill the beans, before you mention theres an issue....

I dont remember what its called but another member mentioned it here, you can go online & review all your repair order history done at the dealer level....

I think the OP can go on Toyota.com/owners put in his VIN and see all repair/service etc.

Well I dropped her off today at the dealer. Sad seeing my "new" truck up on a flatbed so soon. I checked my service records on toyota.com/owners and I don't see any note that a recall was performed on the fuel pump. Hopefully will get a call back today or tomorrow with good news that they won't push back on it being warranty work.
