Hello everyone! I have been having issues with my truck, well only one issue really. My truck wont accelerate past 86 mph. it happens every time. it will get to 86 just fine. but the engine sounds very loud, more loud than normal. it happens even if the cruise control engaged. if im at 86mph and let off and full throttle it does go up to 88 but then with the throttle all the way down slows to 85 then back to 86 and stays there. The dealerships in this area say they cant T/S because of the speed. but im sure it would do it even if on a lift. I dont have any engine modifications, I do have 33inch tire, 5.29 nitro gears, a front bumper and sliders, an aftermarket remote start, and an aftermarket head unit. this problem didnt happen after i installed any of the mods. Any help would be really appreciated.

5.29 gears on an auto which had 3.9 stock will lower the speed limiter to about 85mph from the normal 115ish.

    5.29/3.9 = 1.35
    115/85 = 1.35

It’s a frequent topic on here

Need to retune the truck with the settings for top speed raised. The higher driveline speed of 5.29s tells the computer you’re going faster than actual and so it governs you early.

Where in CA can you reach 86 mph.
When I lived there anything over 40 was like doing light-speed with all the traffic.

I wonder if the Speedometer Correctors would have any effect upon this problem.

Also wonder if the speed is actual (verified by GPS) or displayed only.

The speedometer correction will not do anything to help with this. The speedometer correction corrects signals from the wheel ABS sensors that generate the dash speedometer data. The governor that the PCM applies on automatic transmission trucks runs off of a speed sensor on the transmission that measures driveline speed. The faster 5.29 driveline speed has sped things up by 35%.

The only way that the inaccurately calibrated speedo factors into any of this is that due to the 33’s installed, he’s probably going more like 89 mph actual when governed, while the dash states 86. But the truck is governing it an indicated 86 mph, which if on stock tires, actually comes out to 83 mph actual speed, since the stock dash speedo reads a few % fast.

If he used a hypertech or similar to calibrate for the 33’s, the result would be he would see 89 on the dash when governed (if calibrated correctly of course), but it still wouldn’t let him go back up to 115 or whatever the exact stock governor limit is.

i do have a speed calibrator installed and set up for the 33s thanks for the advice!! its much appreciated. also, i do drive cross country and some places the speed limit is 80 or 85 not many but i was worried the truck was experiencing an actual issue.

I’m curious why would you drive cross country with 5.29 gears and 33 inch tires? You wouldn’t be experiencing any problems if you were driving a vehicle setup for highway miles.

Since you outed yourself as an Annapolis naval academy student, I feel the need to chastise you for confusing the word acceleration with velocity. ;) J/k

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
You don't want to go 88...strange things happen at that point.
