Any woodworkers?

Cleaned up and rearranged the machines today. I put the dust collector in the center of all the machines I hook up to it. Trying to get a better layout before I start my next big furniture project.

In the meantime, working on two more cherry & maple frames. These two are for me.




If anyone is local to me and looking for a benchtop jointer, I am looking to sell my Rikon. Nothing wrong with it. It just did not work well for the things I build. Don’t want to deal with the cesspool of marketplace if I don’t have to.

 

I keep this bookmark. Does it makes me "odd" that I actually LIKE this? Look at the post 2 or 3 earlier of the clamped-up staircase.

Yep. I need a few more smaller clamps. Even the Rockler band clamps got involved today.



In glue for a couple hours now. So many clamps I really can't get in and do much with squeez out on the outside.

Cleaned up the handles on the table saw, where I probably should have started vs the band saw. Rounded over and sanded the handles before glue up.

And decided that I'm going use clear poly on this vs oil. It's going to primarily for serving dished and and instapots. I think the poly will stand up to that and storage a bit better.

 

Waiting for finish to dry. Should be able to mount the artwork tomorrow.

Cut to length. I cut opposite sides together so they are exactly the same length.


Dominos for alignment and strength. Two tight and two loose to allow for adjustments during glue up.

Chamfer added to the outside edge on the router table, Sanded and finished with Furniture Butter.



I think that I am finally getting the hang of frames after making at least 20+ over the last few years.

 

The wisdom one can gain from this thread is endless.

 

I walk past the latest item I built, and the polycrylic is still setting up. Aside from the wonderful odors that emanate from a woodworking shop from cutting, sanding, routing ... subtle odors that tell you the final protective finish is taking hold on your latest creation is pretty satisfying as well.

 

Two frames and a shop project completed today.

I cut the plexiglass, matting and foam backing boards. Mounted the artwork and attached the hardware for hanging.

My table saw and zero clearance were looking rough, so I spent some time making them happy again. New zero clearance is made out of hard maple.

Now I need to show the table on the bandsaw some attention.

 

Learned an unfortunate and probably previously ignored lesson yesterday. And one I probably should have learned on the desk build. Measurements. I need to write more detailed plans. And read them before the next step. I don't usually have this issue with projects, I see the steps and just do them. Math = Kryptonite apparently.

I took the stove top dimensions as my final dimensions. They are not. I needed to add the "breadboard" frame to the noodle board to get the clearance I need to fit over the stove, not on it. I didn't do that. I tucked my nicely cut risers under the top surface leaving the board too small to fit over the stove.

Off to the local mill yesterday hoping to find something in the cut offs that would work. Nope. Brought home some ambrosia maple and rough milled it to the approximate dimensions.


Today I manned up and cut off the errors from yesterday. The front is good, I'm making adjustments to the sides and back. And then in the much better lighting today (sun vs clouds) I saw some deep scratches in the top and bottom of the board. Back to 40 grit to clean up the cuts (I left them 1/16th" away from the board surface) and scratches.





Planed the maple down to it's correct thickness (3/4") and cut the back section to size. That is currently in glue in the basement because it's cold outside and my kerosene heater is on the fritz.

Tomorrow I'll glue the back piece on and then cut the handles in the side pieces. Once it's (re)assembled, round overs and back to sanding. The plan is to take the bottom to 120, the back and sides to 220, and the top and front to 400. And clear poly to finish it for a little more durability.

Some good news today helped ease some of this. Block work was started on the crawl space for the new house today, and framing may begin Friday. Camera goes up tomorrow and timber delivery is Thursday. Nest week we'll be there to mark out the floorplan and have an opportunity to make any final adjustments.

Book shelf speaker shelves for my office- before living room shelves - will cut down to 11”x12”.

 

Have the day off to attend a funeral later today. Used the time this morning to hit up my local hardwood dealer.

Lots of cherry for my next couple of projects. Nice stuff for $4.08 a board foot. He made me a deal on the 1/4” cherry plywood that I could not pass on, so it came home as well. I can save a couple of bucks using it for a back panel in an anticipated project.




I need to travel over to the central coast tomorrow morning to visit a different hardwood dealer to get the 8/4 cherry that I still need. About 1 1/2 hours away. My local guy did not have any.

Some beautiful pieces of Paduk, Purpleheart, and Lacewood are making me try to think of how I could use them.

I tend to shy away from purple heart because it always turns brown and looses the cool purple color.

I’m just trying to make a thin colored line. Wife says it looks like blood

I’m more worried now about loss of adhesive strength. I think something like RIT dye would be better

 

Should look nice when done. Looking forward to the end result.

 

Made it Mayan Hardwoods in Paso Robles CA this morning. Plenty of 6/4 and 8/4 cherry to choose from. Got enough for a couple of projects.



These two amazing pieces of Whit Oak almost came home with me even thought I don’t currently have a use for them. I was able to resist.



Attempting to build my interpretation of a Greene & Greene style whiskey cabinet. My inspiration is this Stickley Gamble House Bookcase. Made it home and got this far. These will be the sides so you get the idea. Legs are way too long, panels are not glued up yet, and lots of details need to be added. Planning on the top being about 40” off the ground.
