Hey guys! Got a complicated question…

Went to drain and fill my 2009 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner (V6, 160,000 miles), got the tools, right ATF WS, everything. Drained it and only 1 qt came out and was pretty dark. Didn’t smell awful but was definitely darker. Decided to pump in 3.5 qts due to the amount seeming low the normal amount people put in. After filling, shifted the gears a lot and then put it into temp check mode. For some reason, the temp check light stayed solid the whole time rather than disappearing, so I thought that meant it was already ready to go. I then accidentally unscrewed the drain plug rather than the overflow plug, draining all my transmission fluid out. It was darker in color, but I put it back into the transmission, sealed everything up, shifted the gears again, and put it into temp check mode. This time I let it sit for 12 mins and then drained the overflow plug and got about 2 quarts out. I drove it around and it felt great and even was shifting better than before.

Basically, I’m asking if should I redo this process again, take it to the mechanic, or just keep driving it.

    Thoughts?

Start all over again. When you drain it make sure it’s cold, measure how much comes out. It should e about 3-4 litres. If not I would put 3.5 litres in then do the temp check procedure. Did you read the procedure for doing this? You know the truck has to be running to check your level.

At this point, the only way to know for sure is to get it in temp check mode.
Or buy a scan tool that shows the active ATF temp.
Then fill/drain like the FSM says too….. a trickle.

If I did my math right, you took out 3 qts and added 3.5. So, you have .5 qts more than when you started.

I think you are good. Do another drain/refill in 20-30K. With 160K, maybe drop the pan next time to clean it out and clean/replace the ATF filter.
