Sport mode has definitely killed my MPG during city driving. It holds the lower gears for longer.

So, in the absolute worst conditions - short trips with dozens of stop / starts (going to work and taking kids to school in downtown Houston), my fuel economy is fine. A bit over 19. Also, VERY interesting .. is that around town, my electric motor runs a lot more because the heavier tires charge up up battery faster when I brake. Kinda cool?

Tires weigh 60 pounds. This truck continues to impress me.

I’ll report out on longer drives as well. My guess is I’ve lost 1-2 MPG depending on conditions.

I’ll add that I’m only aired up to 32/33 on E range tires

Recently got my TRD Pro in Ice Cap. Stock with OEM tonneau cover. Fun to drive. Decided to take a road-trip with my wife from Wichita to the Grand Canyon and other places in the area.

Was at 955 miles when we left. I’ve been good during the 1000-mile break-in period. Driving in eco-mode so far on this trip using cruise. Tires at 30psi when cold (32-33psi while at speed). Between Wichita and Santa Fe, mostly interstate driving (75-80 mph), with 10-15 mph winds in varying directions, getting 15.6mpg. RPMs are at 2K in 8th, up to 2.3K in 7th. That’s not good in my opinion. Interesting that it’s shifting between 7th and 8th gears often, even on small grades. Going into 6th on steeper grades. Doesn’t have a problem going up grades, but shifting is a little annoying.

it’s a comfortable ride, but was hoping to get closer to 18-19mpg in that type of driving.

Honestly that seems super reasonable for the speed, the wind, and the grade.

Not going to disagree with you as it’s my first Toyota (traded a ‘16 F150 ecoboost), but if you’ve ever driven from Wichita to Amarillo, there is no grade (ha). F150 was rated something like 18 city, 22 hwy - normally got 20mpg in this type of driving. Just surprised at the sub-16mpg.

That seems pretty low to me as well. Try normal mode for a while.

Going to use normal from Santa Fe to Grand Canyon to see what that does.

To follow up…Santa Fe to the Grand Canyon was a redeeming drive. Drove in “normal” mode the entire drive. Right at 20mpg. That is perfectly fine with me. Have to admit, it doesn’t exactly make sense that “normal” is 4mpg better than “eco” mode, but I’ll take it. Drove like a champ - much less shifting gears - stayed in 7th longer than in “eco” mode which was much more tolerable.

Around 2,200 miles on the odometer now. Started this trip with just under 1,000.

The ECO/NORMAL/SPORT settings with a 6 speed are the same, but different. I’ll explain.

ECO- I’d probably only use this off road or when I’m moving a trailer around maybe? When you need smooth throttle control this is your mode. Really soft response.

NORMAL- Pretty… well, normal. It’s clear that moving up the ladder increase throttle response and bring boost online sooner. In normal mode I don’t really notice the turbo spooling in first or second gear, but you can definitely get her singing in the rest of the gears.

SPORT- I really like sport mode. Really responsive and it starts feeding the boost a lot sooner. First gear not so much but the rest of them- oh yeah. 3rd thru 6th are really the sweet spot, and in sport the boost is right there as soon as you squeeze the trigger. In top gear even from 75 or so- there’s a satisfying stream of torque that feels like it wants to keep pulling… no downshifts, just smooth and solid forced induction torque. It’s pretty cool.

Now mileage… I don’t know. If I was after mileage I wouldn’t have bought another Tacoma. My answer is mileage? Yes.

Running normal mode + mid grade fuel (91 octane), this 5500 pounder is getting super decent gas mileage. For all those complaining about this truck, I really don’t know what you’re expecting. Oh, and I’m on E load 60.3 pound tires with 9.3” tread width!!!!
I will say that over 65mph - mileage goes south as the wind resistance gets to be too much. Will report on that this weekend.

Just returned from 350/350 Road Trip. Stock Trailhunter with only front Tow Clevis's and Custom Cat-Back Exhaust. Running 75-80MPH majority of trip and saw 18.3MPG both ways. Just rolled over 3K miles. Temps from low teens to 30's and rain most of return trip. Very comfortable - fun to drive and plenty of power. Did play a little in the snow. Very predictable.

That’s great for that speed - higher than me probably bc of my tires - are you on stock tires ?

also tell me more about the exhaust !

Hybrid owners - are you seeing better mileage using Eco or Normal? Normal seems better for HWY cruising.
Mine seem fairly similar but I am still sub 5000 KMs.

I am not sure but after several thousand miles my truck seems to be settling somewhere north of 18mpg combined — this is a mix of very conservative light footed driving using battery as much as possible and very jackass driving like popping 80 on small county roads
