I'm not sure what to call these trucks in the USA. Is there a standard I missed? My 91 is clearly a Toyota Truck. No questions on its name. But the 80 is my question. Is it a Toyota truck or a helux? My understanding is that any Toyota Truck regardless of year sold in north America is a "Toyota truck". But Colorado dmv titled my 80 as a helux???? Confused

They were indeed a hilux. No in one in my neighborhood growing up ever called them a hilux …name was totally ignored. Why? For me the brand name was just too Japanese, and the trucks were just to cool for that back then.

They were always Toyota trucks when they were new, at least where I grew up. Never saw the H name till the 2000's.
So is it pronounced hill lux or hi lux?

In North America, Toyota sold their trucks as a "pickup".
If you are looking for parts for an early model Toyota truck, the model is identified as a "pickup".

    Cheers

I think it’s just marketing for diff regions right? Maybe diff parts are only available I. Diff regions and so diff names for roughly the same truck? I see the Hilux all over Costa Rica and they look pretty close to the Tacoma

Good to know I'm way past my Best Before date. Also relevant, Toyota sold its TownAce van in North America as the Toyota Van (before the Previa, like Previa was a good name but TownAce wasn't).
