Both the inside and outside drivers door handles simultaneously quit working on my Tacoma base model.
I do NOT have power door locks.
Does anyone have an idea of what may have failed?

I would guess that the mechanical linkage popped lose due to a broken plastic retaining clip.

Did you do any work inside the door recently?

The only explanation, but I thought these use a metal retainer for the cable.
I've never heard of this happening before, well done steelfed.

Pretty sure they use plastic clips on the mechanical linkage rods.

Could this be related to the cold snap. Plastic parts can fail due to contraction and expansion.

Since both outside and inside handles aren't working the problem will have to be at the latch assembly itself. That's the only place both of them connect to each other. I've attached the door diagram pages from the repair manual so you can see where it all is and how to get to it.

Thank you for the effort. Sincerely appreciated.
Here's to hoping the latch can be operated by hand when the door trim is removed, so I can open the door which is required to remove/replace it

Unsolicited advice, as you're experiencing, when the plastic clips break it's a PITA. I'm good with a lot of aftermarket parts but given how cheap the Toyota OEM parts are (and I don't mean inexpensive, they're expensive for little pieces of plastic) and since yours are obviously starting to fail, if I were you I'd go ahead and buy enough OEM parts to replace all of them as well as the tailgate clips. I haven't had issues with the doors yet thankfully, but I've replaced the clips on the tailgate rods twice; you can cinch a wire tie/ziptie around them and even if the clip breaks the tie will usually hold the rod in place well enough to let you actuate the latches if you're careful and you keep the latches lubricated so they don't stick. If you have anything in front of the tailgate panel it can be difficult to access the screws on the panel so I just considered it preventative maintenance to preemptively replace them all when the first one failed.

I 2nd this OEM recommendation with the same tailgate experience. I've replaced with new rods/plastic clips and they continue to give me trouble.

Update....Remove the fabric panel on the door and the handhold it provides makes pulling the door panel off relatively easy considering the door is shut

Yes. The lock assembly was the culprit
