I just took my Tacoma in for the recall on the third brake light. I have noticed some water coming in from the headliner. No mold/smell to my knowledge (yet).

They informed me they wouldn't do it due to a preexisting crack and would have to charge $1200 for a replacement light assembly.

While searching the forums, I've quickly come across many others with the EXACT same crack and situation. Most say it's due to over tightening of the bolt. See photos below (mine is the white truck).

What's the deal here? Any others in a similar spot?

    Not a recall. It's a campaign.

Crack is likely not your fault, but the campaign is not for replacement of the light it is for installation of an additional gasket around the light to prevent water intrusion.

Advise to contact Toyota Corporate for a goodwill repair. Over tightening of the 3rd brake light bolts is a known issue.

Same thing just happened to my third brake light. Did they end up replacing it?

    Aloha,

Lost my 1st gen Tacoma in an accident in 1/25. Here's the post on it.

Replaced it with a 3rd gen.

So, I'm new here in the 3rd gen forum.

I've read a few threads in this forum on the 3rd light campaign by Toyota.

My truck appears to have gotten the fix because it has the surround trim/bezel in place.

The lens however shows cracks ... not large cracks like in the pictures by cyrzee.

I have some extra clear 3M PPF, so I covered the whole lens with it. Then for extra measure, I put clear silicone sealant on the gap between the lens and the bezel. Top and sides only.

I plan to replace the whole brake light assembly but figured I'd do this to eliminate any risk of water intrusion into the cab.
