Continuing transmission problems. It's sometimes popping out of a low gear and sometimes only grinding instead of popping out (like an intermediary stage to popping out in 1st).
The fluid was changed a couple of years ago (no leaks)...the shop said there were no shavings in the old fluid... and I swapped the shifter seal/bushing today.

Realistically how long can I nurse this transmission along and is there any luck with a low mileage used replacement (how to know if it's worth the effort? does the shop doing the work know?) or a rebuilt bought through a shop? TIA

I had this issue in a 3rd gen 4runner I had, what fluid are you using? I replaced whatever was in the transmission with redline mt90, after about 500 miles it stopped popping out.

With the limited info I would suspect the clutch. How many miles are on it? Things you could do to get more info. Change the fluid and hope you dont have chunks or pretty sparkles. Make sure the clutch is properly adjusted, clutch fluid lvls, cluch fork Etc. Get it up to speed 55+ and do a clutch dump in to 5th. Does it grab or slip? Can you tell? As far as milking it. Its going to work untill dosn't and hopfullly your not stuck.

x2 in the MT-90, but might not be worth the extra $ for exploratory diagnosis.

Thanks for the reply. The clutch was replaced not that long ago (in terms of miles). Checked clutch adjustment. Replaced the fluid about a week ago but not with redline. Better but not fixed. It shifts a bit hard.
