I just bought my 2017 little over three months ago, SR5 and was a one owner, all documents and had 41,480 when I bought it. I just put the first 1,000 miles on it this week, and I couldn't be happier with it. It's got the physical key, no auto lights, wipers or anything else really. Came with the tow package, fog lights. It's fancy enough for me. I didn't want push button, nor anything to do with the lane keep or auto cruise control etc. I plan on being buried with this bad boy lol. I say go for the 2017 if I were you.

Hey, I have an insane 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport in quicksand color, with completely customized interior, among other modifications. I need cash because of my crazy wife, so I am going to have to sell my truck. I am in Northern CA, in the San Francisco Bay area, if you are interested....

Thank you everyone for their input. I’ve narrowed it down to the 2016 and 2017 granted whichever meets my desired numbers. it seems like everyone is saying the 2017 is a better deal - here’s a little bit more detailed information

—the 2016 is very clean has only 31,000 miles on it and literally looks and drives brand new- it has has one owner, was in 2 minor frontal accidents as per the Carfax, but it seems perfectly fine. There is minor rust underneath, but it’s minor, especially for the year. The 2016 also has climate control, sunroof, heated seats and a bed cover
—- the 2017, 2 owners with no accidents, 80,000 miles on it has been driven has cosmetic wear and tear, but I get it , it is a truck nonetheless and still looks good and drives nice. It does not have the climate control, heated seats, sunroof or bed cover. It’s silver certified by Toyota , had brakes replaced, has been conditioned and with that silver certification has 12 months for powertrain. — I’m struggling with 2016 being the first year of the third generation, and it being like a brand new vehicle versus the 2017, which has a better reputation has been certified by Toyota and is currently valued as more. my plan is to hold onto this truck, but at the same exact time I’m also trying to evaluate, which would be worth more down the road if I were to sell it at some point

My 2016 has been a great truck once I address a handful of first year TSBs. Here is my list: weeping rear end, crankshaft position sensor replaced, transmission fluid 1 quart low from the factory, trip meters random resets/combo meter replaced.

My truck is fine but also check the plastic coolant crossover pipe and timing chain cover for leaks.

    Good luck with your purchase.

Edit: even if you are getting a Manual I would still check the fluid level.

Do you have any plans for mods in the future? If infotainment is important to you the 2020 will have more features stock. If it were me, I would choose the 2017.

Make sure you can live with the sunroof.

Depending on your build & seating preferences it can be a head banger.

I got in a sunroof truck, rang my bell and got right back out.

I recently went through the OP's decision process. My search criteria were TRD Sport Access cab manual transmission. First I came across a 2016 Inferno orange 1 owner with 49000 miles in Southern CA, and a clean Carfax for $29,500. I deliberated for a few days before making an offer and it sold. Turns out it was only 1 of 2 imported to the US with that color in a MT AC TRD sport. Next I located a red 2020 with 49,000 miles, 2 owners, a CarFax that didn't show much service, for $30,500 in Portland, OR. I made plans with the salesman to fly out from Tucson to pick it up. After scheduling my flight, I called back to place my deposit, he apologetically informed me that it had been sold. Amazingly, I found a white 2017, 1 owner, dealer serviced with 46,000 miles and a Toyota 1 year power train warranty, across the Columbia river from Portland in Vancouver, WA. I used my 2/7/25 plane ticket, flew to Portland, took an Uber to the Toyota dealership, signed paperwork and drove off to Coeur d'Alene on route to Bozeman to visit my son. The truck has exceeded my expectations. It handled the snow with a plumb. The trailer package receiver has never even been used. It's as you describe the low mileage 1 owner Tacoma you're looking at, looks and feels like new. There's something about older low mileage vehicles that people hold onto for a long time. You get the sense they didn't use them much because they wanted to preserve that new car feel. Sometimes, I imagine they were an older guys last hurrah, their ideal truck.

My gen 3 Tacoma brings back nostalgia of my previous Toyota trucks, a 1991 2.4L MT AC 4WD and a 1998 TRD 3.4L AC MT 4WD. Both were white.

I left my 2017 in Bozeman, flying back 2/9/25 to Tucson for work on Monday. My Tacoma sits in Bozeman, covered in snow, awaiting my 3/13/25 return. My wife in I will be taking a scenic route driving it back to Tucson.

Good luck with your purchase. Gen 3 AC MT's are "the bees knees."

Try to lower price for 2020, forget about the 2017 with 2 owners and I would personally not go for 2016.

So my advice is to try negotiating with 2020, but make sure you talk to mechanic who worked on it, and maybe understand what happened.

OF course I have a scooped hood since it is a TRD Sport model, but no I would not want to trade. I saw you live in Tehachapi, I really like that place! My favorite is the Love's convenience store and gas!

I know, that probably the biggest attraction is the Tehachapi loop where the trains circle around a loop and online, it is the Tehachapi trains at Cable. I personally like that one best because it is situated in a Airbnb, where a camera is 24/7 pointed towards a long section of track right beside Hwy 58. There is a huge mountain in the background, so the scenery is fantastic, especially when there are winter storms in there with snow. Of course there is also the train museum with various train related items. Yes, Tehachapi is a pretty cool place!

I have the 2021 TRD Sport and read that is the best year of the 3rd Gen for no issues as most have been corrected.:fingerscrossed:

    FYI,

2017 and 2020 are big difference which means 2020 has nanny stuff in it.. such as Blind Spot monitor, SOS, etc.. 2017 do not have those. If you like lane detector, then get 2020. Otherwise get 2017 if you don't want those things in it.

    I have a '17. Great truck.
