My buddy found both sheds off this deer in this field last week. I need to get by there with my daughter and let her hold them and get a photo. For those that don't know, he let me bring the kids over to hunt this season and his only request was don't shoot anything with horns, fine with me cause we needed meat. Daughter shot one doe and my son shot 2 there. This 8 came out and my daughter and I had to watch him for 45 minutes.

I've been blessed to harvest some nice deer in my years of hunting, this was the best 8 pt. I've ever seen.

I won't argue with you on that. Nice looking Buck. Way bigger than my NC 10 point. But I'm happy with my one "Trophy" buck hanging on my wall right above my head.:)

You're a better man than I am. Would have been going nuts, to just sit and watch him for almost an hour without the chance to take a shot. But you did accomplish what you set out for, and that's meat in the Freezer.

Yea that would have been tough for me too. I was butthurt for having to watch an 8 half that size when my oldest daughter was hunting with me (she ain’t the hunting type but wanted to sit and watch with me)

The most impressive 8 ptr I think I've seen was in Massachusetts in my scotch broom research trial... I had a 35mm disposable camera to take pictures of treatments when this guy stumbled upon me.

    IMG_2266.jpg
years later, I recall the trips out there (& that deer) on a shed my major prof (W.A.P.) found. My first shot at scrimshaw. It’s been my short starter and nipple tool for decades

    Nice deer!! I Reckon that’s a 44 point :D

TW style anyways (it checks out. See @wilcam47 for more info**) :anonymous:

More serious though, anyone shed some light on when/why the west coast went to counting sides vs total points?? I could be wrong, Maybe it’s not coast to coast at all but species? There are whitetail pretty far west, simply culture? I’m sure I’m not the first one to say so but based on I guess my childhood and life experience I immediately see/say a “3x3” or a “3 point” (and I may say with eyeguards if someone is also a sportsman) :crapstorm:

maybe no one really knows but like to hear your guys’ take:cheers:

not hating either, things like this add to the sport IMO

    Wondered that myself.

Old Timers in the Northeast (myself included) used weight as a measuring tool.
Benchmark was always a 200 pounder. :notsure:

    We've always called an 8 an 8, or a 4 a 4. Spike=cowhorn. That's the way it was growing up and that's what we still do :D

I always wondered why out west they call them 4 X 4, or whatever.

    IDK

I grew up calling them 8ptrs, then lived in Forks for a decade where 3x3 w/ eye guards was the norm. Then back in the south east and now in Washington again.
So I still use fixin and Ya’ll but also rigging fit and eye guards. I think it’s just an accent. ???

have an uncle from forks, can’t say I’ve been that way in awhile though! And there are plenty of examples of different terms of course from all over I agree with you there, just wondering how it all came about on the deer in particular lol

Back in Buzzards Bay the locals called my pictured deer a “wicked mash-ah”. Lol

    Yes I do
    Some
I had never heard skippers until I came to TW.
    :anonymous:

Another thing I've noticed (and I think its also region related)....
If we see 7 female deer we would say "we saw 7 does".
I've noticed from watching yt videos that in the northeast if they see 7 female deer they say "we saw 7 doe". They leave off the plural (s).

No idea if there's a right or wrong way, just something I've noticed thats kind of interesting.
