So, recently I posted a few questions about a strange noise in my drivetrain around this forum and other Taco sights and it remained a mystery. The sound was a whomp whomp sound that only occurred under load and more prevalent between 10-25mph. It increased and decreased with acceleration and deceleration. My private mechanic thinks it was the center support bearing.

Took it to the dealer today as I am still under certified used warranty status and powertrain warranty too.

Dealer told me there was a $250 diagnostic fee unless the issue fell under the warranty. If so, I wouldn’t have to pay that cost. I was prepared to eat sh$t because of all the horror stories I see on here about claim denials.

Well the report came back 4 hours later. Report stated “weird driveshaft noise” and the recommendation was “complete driveshaft assembly replacement”. Service adviser said to me, “it’s the driveshaft. You’re covered.” I was prepared for the worst but ended up being very satisfied. The only problem now, is the assembly is back ordered a few weeks and now I wait.

Tonight I’m having a beer and a shot!

I was thinking carrier bearing in your original thread but you can’t go wrong getting a new driveshaft.

reading your description, i was thinking a driveshaft universal rather than the carrier bearing.
bearing = vibrations, universal = thumps.
i think the carrier bearing is separate from the driveshaft. let us know if you get a new carrier bearing with the new driveshaft.
virtual beer and shot here with you.

edit: you will probably get the whole assembly which includes the carrier bearing. way too complicated to have shop do that if they can just order the whole thing.

edit2: and then there is “complete driveshaft assembly replacement”.
note to self, read more carefully. i still think it is universal though.

I wanted make sure it included the center support bearing so I researched the part number on my authorization form. It’s part of the assembly.

UPDATE: So, the driveshaft was replaced and I was told the issue was resolved. However, the moment I drove it off the lot I heard the familiar "womp womp womp".
Took the truck right back and they sent out the shop foreman to meet me. We drove it together. Swapping seats and listening. He was very accommodating and gave e about 45 minutes of his time. I was impressed with him and his customer service. He still couldn't 100% diagnose it and didn't want to give me another "false" diagnosis, so he asked me if they could keep it for a few days and put some "chassis ears" on it. I heard from the service advisor today that Toyota approved a warranty claim for a replacement transmission! WOW. At this point, I still don't actually know what the problem is, but I'm trusting their diagnosis again. I will know more in the next day or so.

Now I wait for the "nationally backordered" transmission. Will I get a new one or a refurbished one? I guess I don't really have a choice, right?

I'm left with so many questions and uncertainty.

Service advisor says I can take my truck home and bring it back when the replacement arrives. Getting that in writing.

We'll see how long this takes.
