Redline MT-90 ever separate/spooge on anyone?

After all the rave reviews here about Redline MT-90 in their manual gearboxes, I thought I would try some.

I bought some online and it's been sitting for a few months in my non-insulated shop (read: cold ass shop). Finally had a nice day today where I felt warm enough to feel like changing it.

Long story, the majority came out like gear oil, but the bottom of the bottle had separated into this gelatinous goo. The goo didn't make it into the tranny but I'm worried part of the additive package is bad or at least didn't go where it was supposed to. Is this going to be an issue? What would you all do?

Notice the boogie coming off the bottom of my finger when cleaning up. Yuck!

 

My first thought was, if it did that in the bottle, it will probably do that in the transmission; and it probably shouldn't do that. Does it matter? Not sure. I'd contact Redline and see what they think. Where did it come from?

FWIW, I used the well regarded Motorcraft fluid in mine when I first got the truck and it was better than whatever the PO's shop put in; and switched to MT-90 just for kicks and to scratch an itch of curiosity after my clutch replacement. I like the MT-90 quite a lot better..much smoother.

 

Thanks for posting. As per your good recommendation, I reached out to Redline just now. They're on CST so it went to voicemail. I left a message and also sent an email via their website.

Oil was purchased from Redline's Amazon store (tried to buy local and even drove to Portland but no one had it at the AutoZones, Napas or O'Reillys I checked)

 

Yeah their local availability (and sometimes just in general) can be hit and miss. I almost always get the various Redline fluids via Summit Racing, but this last time I was ordering (MT-LV for the transfer case), the only place I could find it was O'Reilly ship to home. Will be curious what they have to say. I was initially thinking maybe old stock, but even then I feel like it shouldn't separate or gel up like that.

 

Redline was quick to respond. The customer service guy called me on his private phone after hours, gave me his personal email to show pictures of the goo and requested the receipt and batch number. They're sending me 4 fresh quarts of MT-90. They eluded to a recall having occurred in 2022 and this may have been leftovers from that.

ive had bottles in my unheated shed for years at a time before using them and never seen them do anything like that. when i cracked em open all was normal lol

 

Oh great, now I’m questioning because I changed mine with Amazon MT90 in ‘23 and just pumped it in there after giving it the customary shake.

Not seeing any info on a recall with an initial search, or looking on their site, which seems a lil shady if that did occur and product got into customers hands

 

Yeah. I've changed gallons and gallons of gear oil in my time (trucks, tractors, equipment, etc.) and never seen anything like this. First time using MT-90, though.

 

Yeah, I thought so too. ZIC Sales is Redline's big distributor for Amazon. So not like it was sitting on a dusty shelf at a rural Napa store or something.

The batch # is 74012 if that's helpful.

Wow, that's quite the response! Glad they're coming through for you. I currently work for a small company making stuffs for people and it kills me that people who have a problem will complain EVERYWHERE but directly to us, where we'd bend over backwards to take care of things. Amazon complaints are especially crazy because we see the complaints (largely people getting stuff that was used and returned ) but they won't give us contact information for the customer to try and follow up. I'm sure exactly no one is aware of that..anyway.

Ugh. My bottles are at the bottom of a completely full recycling bin...and we are told specifically to not bag anything so that's gonna be a mess to get to, if I get the motivation..

 

Same. Ordered MT-LV and got it shipped to local O’Reilly. Being a Amsoil PC I should have just got their GL-4. Next time.

 

I totally get what you're saying. Sometimes people don't know to contact the manufacturer and sometimes it seems people are just unhappy asshats and want an excuse to complain.

In my case, I had just never seen something like this before and didn't know what to think. In those cases, I've found this forum and the level headed collective a great resource, so it's become my go-to in situations like this. Thanks again for the help! It's a good lesson, too, in remembering to reach out to the manufacturer in the future since they are usually driven to make things right with their customers.
