I am thinking of chopping my exhaust around where the rear leaf spring hanger is. It seems that it would keep it from being bashed when driving over rocks atleast 90% as well as an axle dump without the drawbacks.

    Am i missing something?

Picture attached. Thinking of cutting around where the tape measure is.

Cut it wherever you'd like, I'm sure it will be fine. If you cut it and it gets smashed up into the leafs/shackle hanger, then you could always cut it further back. It's level all the way to the axle dump so people usually cut it after the axle because it's higher up, you can angle it downwards, and gives more clearance around the spare tire.

What are the drawbacks of an axle dump chop? I cut mine over a year ago and I have experienced no ill effects whatsoever, no change in noise, tone, etc.

it is still a lower point as I see, try to make a cut so the the pipe is above the lowest point(spare tire I guess in your case)

I cut mine just a little shorter than you have indicated, to prevent the tailpipe from contacting the leaf spring and bedside. Didn't feel like I needed to go shorter.

I may end up cutting after the axle but it seems that the real problem is bashing it with rocks you drive the wheel over which this cut would fix.

If you are still bashing it cut back to the shackle hanger then you are also really close to bashing the shackle hanger and the spare tire.

As far as drawbacks to cutting near the axle I mainly see it as moisture and corrosion. Not a hhuge deal if you maintain things though and does provide a tiny bit more clearance especially if you get rid of the spare tire.
