I was thinking of doing a clay-bar with a ceramic coating. Ive done it before on a jeep but never on a tacoma. That would help? I usually did it once a year

Not just Tacoma but white paint is known to peel. It doesn't do it with every vehicle or every year but if you pay attention, you'll see a LOT more white vehicles peeling down to the primer than other colors. You will see the clear coat peel off on many other colors, but not down to the primer.

The 1st few inches on the front of my 07 peeled pretty bad. Didn't start until it was about 10 years old.

BTW, Toyota doesn't make paint or tires. They buy paint and tires from the same suppliers that make paint and tires for everyone else.

This white paint hysteria is just like that stupid gear hunting thing. It happened to a few therefore (according to TW experts) it will happen to us all! Relax and enjoy your white trucks people!

Ok I will. And even though mine’s one of the few peeling ones and they won’t fix it cause I have a camping shell and a roof rack on it that would be a bitch to take off, I’m happy knowing that white and other light colored trucks get the best gas mileage!:bananadance:

Gear hunting is real. My 23 will rapidly shift btwn 3 different gears on certain inclines which is annoying even to passengers not interested in vehicles. When it does this I switch to an S mode that stops it. The 3rd gen auto is not ideal.

Not if the issue is the paint not bonding well to the surface.

2017 TRD Pro Stormtrooper here and no peeling. I'm in Colorado and the original owner. My Pro is garage kept and for work I park in a covered garage so maybe that's helping things?

My 2017 was purchased in August 2016. Getting close to 9 years and the paint still looks great. Never had any of the other issues but the truck has always been garage-kept.

Bingo. My 2016 paint is still great despite years of FL and AZ sun and heat. Keep it waxed or ceramic coated and you will be in good shape.

I replaced the clear protection film on my bed recently and indeed the paint u deer them is “white” and the paint adjacent has a yellow tinge to it.

It's great that you're taking care of your Tacoma and looking into its paint durability. White vehicles, especially ones exposed to a lot of sunlight, can sometimes show signs of fading over time, especially if the paint isn’t properly maintained. The fading usually occurs due to UV rays breaking down the paint’s clear coat. To keep your Tacoma looking great, regular washing and waxing are key. As for aftermarket paint jobs, if done properly, they can be just as durable as the factory finish, but it really depends on the quality of the products used and the expertise of the shop.

My 21’ is fine. Part of me thinks some of the “white paint hate” comes from people talking themselves into their other color choice while they try to buff out all the pin stripes and water spots……plus I have a letter from Toyota saying they will make things right if it happens to me.

My 02 started to go chalky about 10 years ago. All the shinr was gone and any attempt to wax or hand rub a fine cut rubbing compound was not much improvement. That's why I got to painting and when I found a decent doner, it was game on.
This summer will hopefully have nice enuf weather to let me do the doors, fenders and maybe the bed. We shall see.
Oh, I am doing color and clear seperate.

2019 Super White, garaged at home, exposed at work. Paint looks great.

Sister-in-law got a pinstripe on her ‘23 Runner MGM. Looked heinous…….

I just kept my mouth shut on that one. If only I knew how good that worked in my 20’s.
